What are the recent updates and requirements for extending a DTV visa in Phuket?

Phuket Extension update (posting for science. I don’t care if you think flying out is easier):

Went with the wife and kids this morning to extend (DTV— Digital nomad / remote worker + follower). Did not receive it, but I’ll be going back in a few days. Here’s why—

What I brought (for me):

- Application, 4x6 photo, copy of TM30, passport copies, copy of 90 day notification, copy of lease agreement, proof of payment to landlord

- copy of bank statement (Jan. 26-Feb. 26) showing 500,000 THB (Chase Bank, $15,000+)

- screenshot of current balance

- Articles of Organization for (my own) LLC

- Annual report for LLC

- Document from IRS showing Employer Identification Number

- A copy of one of our digital products

- (self written) Letter of Authorization for remote work (from my own company)

For my wife:

- Application + photo + passport copies + 90 day notification copy

- Bank statement + current balance

- Copy of marriage certificate

- copy of lease agreement, TM30, payment

Outcome

The officer was very kind. He let me know that I truly had everything in order. However there were two problems:

1. The Remote Work Auth. letter was the same copy I used when I applied for the visa originally. It was dated September, 2024. He wanted a newer copy (presumably from 2025). Takeaway: you may need to request a new letter from your company.

2. He wanted to see a bank statement from the current month (truly the last 30 days), not simply my previous statement + current balance. Mine won’t be auto-generated for a few more days, hence the screenshot of current balance. He noticed that the screenshot showed (page 1 of 5). He wanted all 5 pages, not just the one with the balance on it. He was willing to take either what I had (with all 5 pages) or wait for the bank statement to come out. He said “bank statement is better.”

I plan to return after my statement is generated and I update the letter.

Further takeaways and clarifications

- it seems that the process goes like this:

— gather documents and get a queue number

— bring docs to counter for trainee to check

— trainee hands to officer for more detailed check while you wait a few minutes

— officer briefs you on what you still lack (if anything) before submitting, answering any questions

— once you have everything, they will submit for processing

— you come back after a few days after they’ve checked through the documents (even more!) thoroughly for stamp + pickup.

I didn’t have to pay anything today. I’m assuming that you’ll have to attach money to the application when you submit it, and then after a few days they’ll let you know if you were accepted or denied (potentially losing your fee). That’s only after a pre-check and one more thorough check by an officer who (seemed to) be really optimistic that I had everything in order.

The frustration is that this feels like I’m applying for the DTV all over again. I truly wish the requirements were unilaterally consistent and understandable across every immigration office throughout the country, because I think it would really save everyone (including staff) frustration. Ultimately, the staff and officers were very kind and helpful for the whole process.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A recent experience in extending a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Phuket revealed specific document requirements and procedural steps. Key issues included the need for up-to-date documents such as a new Remote Work Authorization letter and recent bank statements. The process involved gathering documents, obtaining a queue number, and having both a trainee and an officer check documents before submission. Many commenters noted inconsistencies between immigration offices and suggested that a border run could simplify the process. The original poster emphasizes the need for clearer and consistent visa requirements across different locations in Thailand.

If the extension process is the same as or possibly even more stringent than the initial application then how is it a 5 year visa, unless you do a bounce. This is what I can't wrap my head around 🤔🤔🤔

Since DTV exists I feel that like everyone wants to live in Thailand for good suddenly…

I'm confident that at the end of the day, you'll have less headache hoping in a van and do a border run. Phuket immigration office will give you white hairs and PTSD, all with a smile. You'll learn it by yourself, like many of us.

i know this feeling. I had NON O visa, i went to ask one year extension. I was turned down 3 times for some really silly reasons. I said to myself i will try to avoid immigration offices as much as i can. I finally picked up DTV visa and i'm happy since i do not have to ask anything to imigration offices. The problem are not the officers. They are very nice actually, but the inconsistant and changing rules.

Your last paragraph mentions frustration that things are not consistently applied. The entire country is structured like that. It’s not done accidentally either.

It’s something anyone living in Thailand will need to get used to.

Part and parcel of Living in the Kingdom, there are trade offs, good and bad. Some of the bad are quite frustrating at times.

You might be the run around by different IO’s the easiest method is to leave and return

tl;dr but is this Old Phuket Town? I remember when I had to have a medical extension due to appendicitis and the person there was super grumpy, to say the least. Patong I've never had a problem with.

For wife and kids you only needed to show $15,000 ?

We were told each person needed to have the 15,000

I'm so confused 😕 we didn't believe it so went to like 4 different agencies that all told us the same thing .
Biff *******
@Luna ******
to clear up any confusion, rather than going to agents, it might be best to go to the immigration office you might use for an extension and ask them. They won’t bite you.
Luna *******
@Biff ******
that's a great idea . Thank you .we go back to Bangkok tomorrow . Both my daughters see doctors there . One for mental health . And my newborn was born in Bangkok so we do have some leeway. We just wanna do things right .
Biff *******
@Luna ******
They can also advise you how to get any kind of different visas/extensions you might be thinking of.

If you speak to them directly you won’t be wondering what’s going to happen at the ‘big bad immigration office’ or be convinced by agents that it’s all so difficult so you need to pay them to do it for you.
Luna *******
@Biff ******
yeah that's what I think we're going to do. The agent man we spoke to said that the business visa might be our best route to go . Which would be great for my husband he's an engineer . And surrounding countries is where our materials are made . And we want Thailand to be our forever home .

We can pay for the dtv but taking money out of investments just doesn't seem right .

Thank you for the insight . And thanks for not being a jerk . Far to many of them out there .
Greg ********
@Luna ******
Have a look at the LTR if your husband is an engineer. Got to BOI in Bangkok and ask directly. Many agents do not have knowledge in all areas so will try to sell you what is most convenient for them.

@Luna ******
You may already know this, but often different immigration offices have slightly different requirements. It’s always worth asking for a list. They have lists. 😊

Good luck with everything.

I will say though — unless something has changed, this hasn’t been my experience. We used the same account with the roughly same amount of money to (successfully, obv) apply in Jakarta.

we were thinking of going there . But we literally got our newborns CRBA like three days before we planned on leaving and we already had plane tickets etc .

So when we get back to Thailand were hoping it all runs smoothly . We heard people saying you only get 30 days now . But from our understanding that hasn't been passed yet .

We get a lot of harsh comments about us coming here without the dtv originally . But we came here to look for places see what we liked etc . Then I had my baby early so we got an apartment for a year lease already . And we were super hyped for the DTVs then we got hot with we all need the funds . Fingers crossed it all works out !

my wife and I have a shared checking account that we keep $15,000+ in. It has both of our names on it. I made two copies — one for me, one for her. The officer didn’t seem to mention anything about it. We may run into an issue later, but he didn’t bring it up. Are you guys in Phuket?
Luna *******
@Thomas *******
no were in Bangkok . We have a shared account as well 2 older kids 13 & 11 and a new born 8 weeks .

We're in Cambodia right now so we can go back for new stamps on Friday . And we're gonna go the business visa route . We met a guy that said it was better for our family as it could be very expensive for us .

We have a shared bank account with the 15k in it and have maintained that for months now . We both work remote . I'm a social media marketing manager . And he's an engineer in car audio for I believe 7 companies .we could transfer the total amount from investments but it just doesn't sit right with us .

The agent did state that it depends on where you apply . But a ton of people were even saying that all surrounding countries never asked . So we're gonna go back to Thailand on Friday and contact the agent , lawyer etc to hopefully see how we can go about the business visa .

And if all else fails we will do the DTV .

You do need more docs for DTV than say the "O" on Retirement and Spouse but process seems to be similar for those doing it themselves. I am sure you will get extension when docs updated and you know next time. Good luck but I am sure you will not need it.
Alex *******
Good work bro. Now that you know exactly what is needed the extensions will be a breeze for you. I'm sure you will get a million comments from Gumps saying you should have done a border run and sat in planes and airports all day 😉

@Alex ******
Agree👍 Most of them just don't qualify anymore, and the rest are simply lazy. As you said, do it once and make it easier for the next time. That's how things have been done until now by other visa holders.
John **********
Inconsistency across immigration offices is not unique to the DTV. Every office has its idiosyncrasies

but nothing like this

you think? And also remember it is not immigration that issues the visas, totally different organisation with different rules.

Why not fly out and in much less work and hassle

A DTV isn't a viable long term residency option. In the meantime, you can easily pack the kids into a minivan and drive to Ranong, pay an agent and do an in/out to activate a new stay. I'd recommend staying the night in Myanmar, perhaps checking out the islands. Should be very doable once every 6 or 12 months and in the longer term, there's no guarantee re-entry on a DTV will always be straightforward.
Thomas ********

@Paul ******
you’re right. It is not a LTR visa. It is 5 year multi-entry visa that allows you to stay for 6 months at a time.
Paul *******
@Thomas *******
Well, no choice for you because the DTV requires travel. It's not a permanent visa
Thomas ********

@Paul ******
I do have a choice. I can choose to extend once per year. If successful, that means traveling *gasp* once per year.

ExcellentTravel I have a family of 5 with three young kids. It’s potentially cheaper with less headache.

@Thomas *******
this "extension" process sounds like a bigger headache to me than dragging my wife and kids to Kuala Lumpur for a few days and back, assuming money isn't an issue. To each their own, though.
Paul *******
@Winston ***********
Even easier is to get everyone in a van for the comfortable 4 hour drive to Ranong. An easy day trip, or better yet, excuse to see some islands off the coast of Southern Myanmar for a few days (it's very safe there).
Paul *******
@Thomas *******
Well, it will be a fun vacation for them and you'll eventually need to leave the country anyway.

yeah we were in seven different countries, 30+ stays last year. We’re tired, man.
