TLDR : Answer Summary
For those looking for offbeat destinations in Thailand after multiple visits, several locations stand out based on community recommendations. Options include Khao Kho for scenic views, Khao Yai for nature and wildlife, and Koh Lipe, often referred to as the Maldives of Thailand. Other notable mentions are the Thi Lo Su waterfall, Chiang Dao Mountain, and exploring the Isan region along the Mekong River for a glimpse of rural Thai culture. A suggested adventurous road trip covers Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, and Mae Hong Son, ideal for experiencing both nature and unique local attractions.

month road trip in the north. We visited Chiang Mai, Pai, Phrae, Nan, Dong Phaya, Phayao, Mae Chan and Chiang Rai … and many places in between. It’s been awesome! If you want off the beaten track, I can highly recommend heading north. Happy trails.

A road trip for you. Drive north on highway 21 to Phetchabun and visit Kao Koh and Phu Tap Buk. From there travel on highway 12 west to Phitsanulok and Sukhothai (many things to see and do). You continue straight west to Tak and Mae Sot. Turn south to Umg Pang and visit the highest waterfall in SEA. Turn north back to Mae Sot and take highway 105 and later highway 108 to Mae Hong Son. Visit the long neck village, Ban Rak Tai and Pang Oung (pine forest with a lake with swans). Ban Rak Tai has a great history, the Chinese lost army ....... Visit Ban Jabu on your way to Pai on the 1095. Unfortunately you are here the wrong time of the year for Ban Jabu's hill tribe new year celebration. Enjoy civilisation in Chiang Mai for a while. Use any of the routes available and drive to Nan. From Nan use highway 1256 and visit Bo Kleua rock salt well. Make your way down to Dan Sai and Loei province. Visit Chaeng Khan next to the Mekong river. Following the lazy river to Nong Kai and Udon Thani. Continue along to Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan. Cut south to Trat and jump on a ferry to Koh Wai. End back in Bangkok (with or without visiting Pattaya). Must haves for this trip a good 4wd pickup or SUV, camping gear, camera, correct attitude and no set plans. Camp Mondays to Thursdays and stay in resorts Friday to Sundays. I only highlighted something's but there are some of the most beautiful places and people hidden on this route. I can promise you one thing few have ever done this. Look at the National parks on this route most have cheap camping sites and views to die for.

How about a tour of Isan and follow the Mekong for a while. Beautiful part of the country and probably quite different to the rest of Thailand.
