Hi! Coming to Thailand (one of my fav places in the world), and looking for advice since I haven’t got a chance to travel all over. Looking at documenting all of the unique people, places, groups, that makes Thailand unique. Anything from adrenaline, cultural, historical, weird, only things you can find there. Love any insight. Thank you so much in advance! ขอบคุณ

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster seeks advice on unique experiences and sites to document during their trip to Thailand. Community members suggest various activities and destinations ranging from cultural and historical sites like the Erawan Shrine and Sukhothai, to adventure experiences in regions like Pai and Isaan. Recommendations include visiting off-the-beaten-path places, enjoying street food, and exploring local markets and temples, focusing on authentic experiences rather than typical tourist attractions.

If you havent been scuba diving, then now is the time,,,, get your certification then jump on a Liveaboard to the Similan and Surin islands.. very few boats out there at the moment and you will have dive sites where you're going to be the only boat there... prices are good now also. PM me if you want to know more.

Get on a class 2 train ride from BKK to Kanchanaburi. It's uncomfortable and hot, but it will give you a real Thai feeling and you'll arrive in a historically important city that has a ton of charm and lots of nature to explore. Get a bungalow right on the riverside. You can get on a boat that takes you upstream and then you can float down the river all the way back to your bungalow.

White temple in Chiang Rai is pretty unique & beautiful, if you're here during Loi Kratong then Chiang Mai used to have an amazing festival. The coach between the 2 towns is about 4 hours of amazing scenery on a twisting mountain road so an experience in itself.

For sure eat steet food which can be amazing but stick to bottled water!

If you are experienced then hire mopeds & get lost down smaller sois & up mountain tracks just be very careful! Take ferries to the islands, they're all beautiful but different. Long tail boat on khoa lak & overnight on floating rafts is pretty spectacular

Thai people on the whole are very helpful & honest. You need to be patient & smiley. The disasters you might have along the way are the stories you'll still be telling in 10 years🤣

I don't know how you are travelling, or who with, but I got the chance to spend some quality time in Chaiyaphum. The city is low key and the surrounding areas make for good day trips. Waterfalls, temples, farmland, nature. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my time there. Then again, you could say that about much of Issan. :)

wowza, was just getting ready to suggest anywhere in that region. I just returned from six weeks north of Khonkaen.

Covid messed up a lot of my Thailand exploration plans. I want to explore more of that area.

Go and hang.out at a back street muay Thai gym for a few days. Not the fancy tourist places. Get to know them a bit and they will treat you like family. Tag along to a fight night ... temple fairs are great ... It's a good way to see interesting Thai life without being ripped off.

Sukhothai for historical sites and night market in zone 1 for fantastic food. This is where Siam kicked off. Book a place which includes bicycle’s and explore all the ruins this place has to offer. Predates Ayutthaya’s amazing ruins and we enjoyed Sukhothai the most. Stay at least 5 days. Pai for your adrenaline fix, rent a scooter and explore the culture. Khao Sok is where we just arrived and seems like a great jungle setting and backpacker vibe. I recommend River&jungle resort. Ko Lanta should be fun for a beach destination although we have not been but will be shortly…next stop. Enjoy

Make some discoveries on your own as well. Thailand has so much to offer. We eat street food almost exclusively. Railay beach in Krabi province is our favourite beach. Town of Mae Hong Son in the north has the most amazing night market positioned around the small lake in the center. It also has great views from the temple on top of the mountain you can walk to from the center. Definitely visit Doi Suthup and it’s amazing temple in Chiang Mai.

are you talking about the Erewan shrine in Bangkok by the Grand Hyatt or the larger Erewan with the 3-headed elephant in Samut Phrakan?

If the latter, then I agree.
