What are the new entry restrictions for foreigners at the Mukdahan border in Thailand?

Had a bizarre experience crossing into Thailand via the Mukdahan border today.

I’m currently based in Chiang Mai on a DTV. I hate flying and actually enjoy long bus rides, so after 40 days in Da Nang, I took my usual land route back: Lao Bao → Savannakhet → Mukdahan. Did the exact same trip from Hue last year with zero issues.

This time, complete change. Every single foreigner was marched straight to the secondary immigration office. Thanks to my DTV, I was stamped through, but an Indian passenger on my bus was seemingly denied entry. From what I could gather through the broken English, the officer was telling him that certain nationalities (heard them mention Indian, Korean, American) cannot cross here without a prior visa.

Strict passport control aside, baggage customs was completely unattended.

Mukdahan never used to be like this. Anyone know what triggered this sudden crackdown on land border entries?
Answer summary
The Mukdahan border in Thailand has recently implemented stricter entry regulations for foreigners. Changes effective from mid-September 2026 include limiting tourists from 60 countries, including the US, India, and Korea, to a 30-day visa-free stay instead of the previous 60 days. Additionally, there is a cap of two visa-exempt entries by land per calendar year. These new measures have resulted in increased scrutiny at land crossings, as evidenced by the experience of a traveler who witnessed an Indian co-passenger being denied entry, reflecting the stricter enforcement of these rules.

You hit the new land border regime that started 15 Sept 2026.

Mukdahan was always quiet, but since the Royal Gazette announcements on 31 Aug, every land checkpoint has been told to enforce:

*1. 60-day visa exemption is gone - now 30 days tourism only*

60 countries including US, India, Korea etc now get 30 days visa-free for tourism only. The old wording that allowed short business is removed. On a DTV you're fine, you're on a visa. But everyone on visa exemption is now looked at harder.

*2. Land border cap - 2 visa-exempt entries by land per calendar year*

This is why your Indian fellow passenger got hit. If he had already used 2 land entries this year - e.g. Lao Bao, or Cambodia crossings - Mukdahan will refuse 3rd entry on visa exemption, even if he has days left. Air entries don't count. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore are exempt from cap - Indian, American, Korean are NOT.

And this is why they marched everyone to secondary - they are counting land entries manually now. The officer mentioning Indian / Korean / American - those are all nationalities that previously abused border runs for visa exemption. Korean is interesting because Koreans actually have a separate bilateral agreement for 90 days visa-free, so if Korean officer said no visa exemption at Mukdahan, likely that person had exceeded land cap or tried to enter on business, not tourism.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Land border crossings draw more scrutiny than air arrivals. This is evident because different rules apply to land crossings depending on nationality and visa status.

It actually happened often when I crossed the border there. But as I lived in the south tip of Nakhon Phanom (and the Nakhon Phanom border, and then the trip on the other side to Savannakhet is pretty long), I often crossed border at Mukdahan nd back.

People who get rejected, are often not long enough in Laos. There is no official minimum time to leave the country, but since about 3 years, if you just leave a day, you usually get rejected entry.

I also got pulled out, but mainly because my passport was nearly full. The immigration officer was a woman, sent me to a seat and wait. And suddenly a guy in T-shirt and Jeans popped up. Asked me how long I was in Savannakhet. And if I have a girlfriend there. So we chatted a bit and he asked for restaurant advices. So I showed them the places on google maps, as I usually give reviews on google maps. (Turned out, despite being not in uniform, he was the boss of Mukdahan immigration).

He brought me to the IO who had kept my passport, and I skipped the line. And she said: "need new passport!", and stamped me in.

Two got rejected same time, one for "not being long enough out of country", the other one, I do not know why.

I did 3 runs through Mukdahan border into Savannakhet to refresh my DTV so far. Each time coming back right away not even spending 10 minutes into Laos.

Never had an issue. They all went very smooth, the only exception was the last one 3 weeks ago and it was not eventhat bad. They asked me to fill a form, they took a picture of me with th IO and before I could even finish the form, they told me I was good to go.

My guess is they have to show some kind of proof or quota that they are checking foreigners ? But after they had that picture where they were "processing" me, everything was good

The scam centers are being scattered far and wide since the Cambodian "crackdown" so most SE Asian countries are scrutinizing any land border crossings to avoid scam center people fleeing one place and setting up operations in another. Cambodia is also restricting the visa that scam workers used which was a "looking for work" visa and was super easy to get. VN has started arresting and prosecuting/deporting operations inside their borders as is Laos most recently. I anticipate it will get very difficult as western nations start their investigations and the fingers point to SE Asia.

Pretty sure you misheard the nationalities. Passports that require a Visa on Arrival can't enter through land borders.

If you're from a country on the visa exemption list, or have a valid visa, you can enter through Mukdahan just like usual.

:

how many dtv visa holdees had entry denied in thailand

There is no official public statistic published by Thai Immigration specifying the exact number of Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) holders who have been denied entry.

While Thai authorities track overall entry refusals—reporting 29,490 foreign denials across all visa types in the first five months of 2026 alone—they do not break down numbers specifically for the DTV.

However, individual reports and immigration law updates show that DTV holders face growing scrutiny at checkpoints. Denials have been documented in specific cases for reasons such as:

• Missing or unverified activity proof: For example, soft-power or Muay Thai DTV holders denied entry when officers called training centers and found they were not enrolled.

• Travel pattern and purpose concerns: Officers questioning frequent border entries, lack of return/onward travel plans, or extended stays perceived as inconsistent with the visa.

• Failure to show required funds: Inability to demonstrate proof of financial resources (such as 500,000 THB) when requested at the border.

If you are planning to travel or re-enter with a DTV, tell me:

• What category your DTV is under (remote work, Muay Thai, medical, etc.)

• How many times you have entered Thailand recently

I can share what documents are recommended to carry to reduce entry risk.

yeah I had the same experience in Nong Khai. Waited around 30 min, with 10 people in front of me and 20+ behind me, two Filipino male travelers that was on my bus to khon kaen were denied entry (they were not on DTV). Officer asked me where I'm going and I told him Sarakham and he stamped my passport.

DTV_BegPecker True, he unlawfully placed a ban on 75 countries but that was struck down in August by the courts. Now there is only a ban on 19 countries based on security (vetting) concerns. Thailand is not included in those 19.

Angelo ***********

DTV_BegPecker The war did not only kill the oil/petrol price in Thailand (an all over South East Asia), it killed the supply.

For weeks half the country had no gasoline for motorcycles. It is a farking difference if I have to cry and pay an insane price: or there is no gasoline at all, and the gas station is closed.

And those stupid Trump voters, have absolutely no clue what is going on in the rest of the world, because of Trumpler.

Bellingham_Yuzu - Are you American? You can’t be that foolish. Trump has put a blanket ban on long term visas for nationals from 50+ countries, including Thailand. His tariffs have impacted prices here, and his self decided war in Iran has impacted tourism, and gas prices. As an American living abroad, I can clearly see the hatred towards us rising over time

Certain nationalities on VoA/exempt can only cross by air.! However, An Indian youtuber lawyer on visa exemption who had arrived by train at Laos border did manage to cross over after he had challenged the IO Supervisor to show any mention of such policy for visa exemption travellers on Thai Govt website !🙂

Thai MAGA is in full force with the equivalent bigotry against foreigners, not helped by horrifying incidents like the American who stabbed a police officer the other day. A lot of people are being turned away, you gotta have a visa and have everything in order and have a backup plan.
