Re: Smart Visa. Thanks Tod Daniels for sharing this. It's a pity you had to shut down the comments -- whether it was preemptively or retroactively -- but it's unfortunately not hard to guess why.

I hope you won't be discouraged from keeping us posted about any new developments. I'm sure that some members, even if it's just a handful, are truly interested in this topic and might feel eligible to apply for a Smart Visa. To those, such information is valuable and sharing thereof much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on the introduction of Thailand's Smart Visa, which is set to begin accepting applications on February 1, 2018. Participants express mixed feelings about the visa's applicability and potential benefits, emphasizing that it targets foreign investment rather than individual digital nomads. Key points include updates from the Board of Investment (BOI), links to official resources, and community insights on the complexities of the application process, including minimum salary requirements and the overall aim to enhance Thailand's attractiveness as a destination for investors. Commenters highlight the need for clarity in the process and express hope for more comprehensive information to assist potential applicants.

The BOI has now issued a detailed update on the process for the SMART Visa, with applications to be accepted from 1st Feb 2018:

If anyone is interested in continuing the discussion, there's quite a bit of text in my most recent follow-up post. Facebook just collapses it all initially to draw attention to the vastly superior medium, i.e., the almighty video.

So the BOI responded to my translation question by simply posting this link:

The part about the Smart Visa starts around 7:30. Now, while there is not much new information in there per se (minimum salary for individuals, tough vetting process by different ministries, etc.) I think you might find some clues in there as to what this visa really is about: Lots of money.

Ignore the ironically inappropriate stock footage of backpackers strolling down Khao San Road and listen to the key parts of the interview: 1/ The reporter asks about an estimate of the positive impact the program will have on the economy. The Secretary General immediately jumps to "enhanc[ing] the attractiveness of Thailand as an investment destination" and that they expect "quite a significant improve [sic.]" of investment applications.

2/ Then the reporter corrects herself when asking the seemingly scripted question: "What groups or people do you think, well, not groups, what *countries* do you think will be interested in this Smart Visa?" Again, the SC talks about foreign investment and goes on to list examples of particular countries.

I'm going out on a limb here and predict that few individuals (who meet the requirements on paper) will get this visa, unless they are associated with a company that heavily invests in the "S-Curve" sectors. Essentially, it will simplify the process for foreign businesses to invest tax-exempt money while letting their employees come to Thailand with their families, hassle-free, as a bonus incentive.

If so, there's nothing wrong with that. Thailand can greatly profit from financial and intellectual investment from abroad. But so far, it seems the choice of name for the program isn't very smart (pun intended). It's essentially an investment campaign.

in this case Labour issues.. but if you step back and see the bigger picture not only in Thailand but most countries the govt always portray themselves as acting upon the people’s safety and well-being but as you mentioned those issues might not be a priority to the population

Do you mean specifically regarding foreign labor pressure, or in general? This is becoming an interesting discussion!

never thought of it that way but makes sense.. cause most of the times reading the news it always seem like it’s the people who are scared and the government is enacting laws to address the public concern

Interesting idea. But IMHO I don't think that's the case. I've talked to numerous Thais about visas and related topics and in my experience they have no clue what's going on. That's not to blame them, it's their country after all and they don't personally have to deal with these things.

Most people are working class and are, I think, much more concerned with immigrants from surrounding countries coming for their low paying jobs. Of course that's a different story altogether.

true..or maybe they are giving the heads up to the local population that more foreign skilled workers might be coming and not be scared of loosing jobs to the foreigners

Thanks Rümï Guhö, I wrote a comment on that post. Let's see if they reply. It was really hard to hold back on the sarcasm for not publishing information targeted at foreigners in the de facto business world language.

This is copied from the text of the PMDU page above the picture about this Visa: This is the information about 'SMART Visa' from Board of Investment (BOI). The English version will be available soon. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks. All these articles give sort of a general idea about the visa, and definitely provide more information than what was available during the last 6 months. I'm looking forward to information about officially issued documents, such as full, detailed requirement lists for each of the 4 types, application forms and fees, description of the application process start to finish, etc.

In my opinion - Nothing in the actions of the Thai Government over the past 4 years should cause anyone to believe that any sort of Visa will be devised or issued to make it possible for people under age 50 to stay in Thailand for long periods of time. In fact the opposite is true - almost every change has been to make it more restrictive for under age 50

Most of the misinformation was put out by Visa Agencies - I think knowingly put out falsely just to entice people to use their visa services.

funny thing is I actually posted a comment on the PMDU thailand page and surprisingly I got a reply to that.. I feel the whole hubbub was started by a post that called this the digital nomad visa... that started the whole assumption game

Yes, that's also the way I see it. The $6000 salary barrier was just published first to discourage the 90% of people who hoped this was going to be applicable to them (fostered by badly executed PR by the government and misinformation in the "press").

True.. but this kind of gives an expectation so all the people be it digital nomads, startup people know what to expect.. hopefully after this people on fb groups will be nicer to others who are interested in this visa especially digital nomads

I sure read it ;) But they also said back in August that "details will follow soon." Not that I won't be trying to follow the matter on my own, but history has taught us that things don't always go as planned in Thailand.

This is by far the most reliable and responsive FB group on Thai Visa stuff, it would be a pity to have Smart Visa-related news suppressed just because of the misconceptions that surround it. Hence my original "comment-as-a-post". :)

I knew it was just going to turn into a pissing match where people slagged off the digital nomad group because the visa which was initially touted as being "for" them turned out to not be for them at all but a totally different demographic of foreigner.

I'll post updates as I come across them and there are more than a few other f/b groups where there are active threads about the smart visa.
