Avoid riding motorbikes as much as possible. They're fun, but the #1 cause of financial and physical disaster I've seen in 10 years in Asia for foreigners.

If you're not gonna be legally working hee, I'd say get a 6 month METV <-multi-entry tourist visa before you come from a thai consulate in Oz.
That'd give you almost 270 days in country, 60 days at a time.
