What is the experience of expats with the Thai Elite Visa, especially in light of recent price changes and potential lockdowns?

Seasons greetings everyone. I am seriously considering applying for an Elite Visa before the end of the year as to avoid the 20% price hike. With the present situation and the possibility of the nationwide lockdown, things are somewhat uncertain. Or are they? Does anyone have an elite visa and what do you think? Many thanks. From an Australian living in Vietnam.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses an Australian expat's consideration of applying for an Elite Visa in Thailand before a price increase. The conversation reveals various opinions about the Elite Visa, including its benefits like ease of travel and no long-term financial commitments. Several commenters mention alternatives such as the OX visa, which has been suspended due to COVID-19, and the time it takes to process applications amid concerns about possible lockdowns. There are mixed views on using a visa agent versus applying directly through Thai Elite.

I have it and I love it. Feel free to ask particulars here or by pm.

One problem, though. If you're not a resident in Vietnam, I'm very uncertain if you can complete the process from there.
Thomas ********************
That is a tough one indeed. He should sneak out of the country and come here by boat and celebrate Thai style. Who's gonna prosecute a 90 year old lad(?) :)

my father and his second wife were very fond of doing cruises and they just stopped last year. Australia is a very different country than from the 1970s...

I'm planning to fly down to Saigon next week and go to the Thai consulate and ask them questions
Thomas ********************
That is a good plan. Combine with talks with elite. I find they're reaponsive and helpful

Yes, I will do that. The only concern I have about getting an elite visa is that there is quite a possibility I will have to return to Australia due to the fact that my father is 90 years old in a couple of months. Australia now has a policy not to allow its citizens to fly out of the country, so I would be stuck in Australia with useless Elite visa
Macan ********
As far as I know they will grant you the old price 500kBath as long as you apply before 31st of December

they get more pedantic it use to take my wife and i both australian 45 mins to do retirement visa renewal and re entry visa even with a lot of people at immigration because we always had a brief case with right documents and copies now it take days as they keep passport overnight of all

paper work

inorder and you have to return next day to collect ....

Yes, the avoidance of all that the hustle and hassle and to replace that with long-term certainty is going to be most welcome.

Oh yes, if the demand for the elite visa increases over time, so could the price. One concern I have is the possibility or the probability of an outbreak of war in the region due to China's recalcitrance and growing animosity toward its neighbors. Just yesterday it was announced that the Indian Navy would join Vietnam in the South China Sea for some exercises.. Trump is going to be in there for another 4 years, and he would step up to the plate if China decided to attack Taiwan..
Jeffrey ************
Leon. If your plan is long term, who knows what the renewal price will be in 5 years. I just wanted guaranteed easy entry/exit with no queue's.. šŸ˜šŸ‘

and no having to see immigration with them

moving the goal posts with documents required yearly and wasting our time when you turn up with the right docs and guy says no

@Leon ****
10 yrs just cost more i donā€™t think any discount otherwise you should just go 5 yrs and then renew 5 yrs i have many friends now who have TE and have not heard one complaint good luck

Thank you for your extensive reply. It is appreciated. The impending rise in the gold price will pay for it all anyway. And the Thai elite visa would certainly make life easier without having to go through all the checks and balances all the time. The long-term security is a good thing as well. Also, if not having to keep a deposit of 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank that would make those funds available for investment..
Leon *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
One good thing is that I can apply before the end of the year and then wait another month or two until I am accepted, and then thereafter I have a month in order to pay. That would give some time to see what's going on in terms of possible lockdowns etc
Bobby ********
The 300k is the difference between having 800k in the bank, and the 500k cost of the Elite. There's been no change in "shorter term" visas for many years. I think it's highly unlikely there will be. In fact, Thailand appears to be shifting more towards medium/long stayers, with the STV, the proposed "digital nomad" visa, and the visa advantages for property owners. I think it's the people who have tried to stay long term on a succession of tourist visa/exempts who may find life more difficult
Leon *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes, it costs money. One important benefit is that if the shorter term visa stipulations are changed to the detriment of those foreigners, then the longer term elite visa offers more certainty and thus stability..
Todd *********
@Leon ****
also, Elite was locked out of the country of most this year, just like everyone else. Thatā€™s the opposite of security
Leon *****

@Todd ********
Yes, that is one concern.
Bobby ********
Todd McGowan. Actually I thought the Elite visa holders were treated like crap. I couldn't believe they were letting in others ahead of this group.
Todd *********
@Bo***
I agree. They are out a LOT of money.... and canā€™t even get back in to their homes. I would not have been happy either lol
Bobby ********
Todd McGowan. It was what actually finally persuaded my friend to go for the OX visa. He joined a Facebook group of Elite visa holders who were complaining that although they'd been told they can re-enter, the Elite Visa management company kept stalling on when it would happen. I thought they would have carried a bit more clout with the government. It's probably the closest visa you can get to permanent residence status, and yet they have to take their place behind 90-day "spouse" visas!
Leon *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
Sorry, what did you mean about the 300K?
Bobby ********
Leon Orb. That is true. However, the 500k cost of the Elite, means you're only talking 300k, which is less than US $10,000. In a cost benefit analysis, you decide if the 500k is worth spending to save yourself ten trips to immigration? 50,000 baht per visit to immigration. If you look at it from the reverse situation, would you visit immigration for half a day once a year if you were being paid 50,000 baht?
Wayne ********
if u can afford it take it just makes life easier in and out airports and not visiting immigration yearly there are saving so even though you pay 500k there are some savings .. i have had it now 4 years and itā€™s excellent and will definitely renew it but again itā€™s only if u can afford to pay for it onky detractors tend to be those that canā€™t afford it or donā€™t see the sense in paying for this visa remember you also donā€™t need to deposit 800k in a bank account and maintain most of it during yearly renewals the TE visa takes hassle out of life in my opinion and TE office and staff very helpful ... my wife has card also

Thanks again for your reply. I am working with a Visa agent woman from the US who's living in Chiang Mai. Actually, I did ask that question as to when the price hike will manifest. Apparently the stipulation is if I apply before the end of the year then I am locked into the existing price.

@Leon ****
donā€™t let these people talk you out of your agent. Sheā€™s free and helpful. I just finished the process and was easy thanks to the agent.

There is 0 benefit of using a visa agent for the Thai Elite. Thai elite is basically an agency.

You don't need a visa agent, you should apply directly to Thai elite.

Also, I've never heard of an America visa agent in Chiang Mai.

oh yes, I've heard it's just as well and easy to do it directly. The Visa agent website is retirein chiangmai.com and she made a good video on YouTube as well concerning the elite visa

It's takes weeks to process so be mindful by the time you get to pay the price increase would have kicked in. The 20 year at a million bht would be the better option. They help arrange the quarantine etc but the process can still take months
Leon *****

Yes, that is a 50% discount for the long term and therefore is attractive.

One question if I may. If the covid-19 thing becomes worse, could the Thai government ask foreigners who have the elite visa to return home?
Garrett ***********
@Le**
What would be the point in that?
Bim *******
@Leon ****
short answer is no if your already in Thailand
Tod *********
You're fine, get the entry level Elite for 500K baht

Now seeing as you're starting it way late I don't know you could get approved fast enough to take advantage of the 500K baht 5 year vs the 600K baht price starting next year. So if you're going to do it, either sh*t or get off the pot :P

That Elite company has been around a good while, and they deliver on what they say.

500K baht for a 5 year trouble free visa is well worth it.

make sure you deal directly with Elite themselves.

Thank you for your reply. I did not know that an OX visa for Thailand existed. Yet, I was just reading up on it and this visa type has been suspended because of the virus...
Bobby ********
Leon Orb. OX is available from Canberra Embassy. I would assume it's available worldwide. A friend of mine from Australia has just recently obtained it. He was going to get the Elite, but because of his "unsurety" of living long term in Thailand he opted for the OX, as it means he gets all his dosh back if he bails after 3-4 years. He's just retired and sold his business so he's pretty cashed-up, and doesn't have a problem with tying up 3m baht for a year with the knowledge he'll get it all back. It's just another option to look at.
Bobby ********
If you're over 50 get the OX visa and save a stack of money
Tod *********
Umm
@Bobby *******
the O-X visa requires 3 million baht banked :O
Bobby ********
Tod Daniels. I should have added "if you're cashed-up". But you do get half of it back after a year, and the rest of it comes back to you if you decide to leave. Elite visa the money is gone.
