Questions about re-entry permits, extensions and VOA — anyone been through this?

Hi everyone! My wife and I are in Thailand on TR Single Entry visas and want to use it as a base to explore nearby countries like Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos. We have a confirmed flight out around day 50 but would love to maximize our time in the region.

A few questions for those who've been through this:

1. Re-entry permit — can we buy one at Immigration or the airport before a side trip? I've seen 1,000 THB mentioned. Is it really that straightforward or are there gotchas?

2. Multiple entries — is there a multiple re-entry permit option worth getting upfront if we plan several side trips?

3. 30-day extension — what do they actually ask for at the Immigration office? Just TM.7 + 1,900 THB + passport? Do they ask for proof of funds or an onward ticket, and what's the best timing to apply?

4. VOA after TR expires — if we've used the extension and want even more time in the region, is it realistic to do a border run and re-enter on a VOA? Anyone done this successfully?

Also looking for a trusted immigration agent or lawyer in Bangkok or Koh Samui for in-person advice if needed.

Thanks so much, firsthand experience is really appreciated! 🙏
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the complexities of re-entry permits and visa extensions for tourists in Thailand on a TR Single Entry visa. Key points include: 1) Re-entry permits may not be sold to tourists as they do not provide extra time; 2) A multiple-entry permit (METV) is recommended for those planning several side trips; 3) Extensions require a TM30 and are subject to different requirements based on the immigration office; and 4) Options for visa on arrival (VOA) may not apply if one has recently stayed on a TR visa, with concerns about being questioned upon re-entry. Additionally, a trusted immigration agent in Bangkok or Koh Samui is sought for further advice.

If you want to travel around Asia and enter Thailand multiple times you need to get a METV good for 6 months with multiple entries and stays of up to 60 days on each entry.

When you say a single entry tourist visa do you mean you paid for a 60 day tourist visa or did you entered on a free 60 day visa exemption?

Your nationality/passport is the key.

1) Most immigration offices will not sell a re-entry permit to a tourist. And it doesn't even make sense to try and get one as a tourist. A re-entry permit just keeps the stamp inside of your passport valid if you leave. When you return, you are stamped in the same exact date if you have a re-entry permit. You do not get any extra time. That's why it makes no sense as a tourist. You only get 60 days to begin with. If you were stamped in until June 15th, got a re-entry permit and then left and returned, you would get your stamp back until June 15th. It doesn't make sense.

2) See above

3) Every office has different requirements. You'll need a TM30 from wherever you are staying. No proof of funds or onward ticket. You can apply when you have 30 days or less left at most immigration offices, 45 days or less at the larger ones like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, or only during the last week at Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan.

4) You do not qualify for visa on arrival, which is where you apply for and pay for a 15 day visa at the airport. Very few countries qualify for this. You probably qualify for visa exempt, which is not any visa. It's being exempt from needing a visa, and currently provides 60 days. If you just spent 60 days with a 30-day extension in Thailand, you MIGHT get one additional visa exempt entry, but expect to be questioned about why you are trying to enter Thailand as a tourist after just spending 90 days as a tourist in Thailand. You will probably not be able to get a 30-day extension on your 2nd entry if you already got an extension this year.
