Anyone else been caught up on the one month 'process time' when doing their first 1 year extension on a non immigrant O spouse visa? Lucky I'll be here in Thailand when that 1 month time passes after I've finished the initial first 90 days and done the extension application. And also lucky I have the multiple re entry as well. Never smooth sailing is it?
Answer summary
Expats applying for a one-year extension on their Non-Immigrant O spouse visa in Thailand face a mandatory 'under consideration' period of 1-2 months. This delay is standard for marriage extensions and requires applicants to remain in Thailand for potential immigration inspections. Issues may arise if applicants leave during this period without a re-entry permit, as it could void their extension application. Some expats are considering switching to a retirement visa due to the more immediate processing associated with it. It's crucial for applicants to discuss their situations with immigration officers to avoid complications.

Thailand is trying to align the visas to the real reason of your stay.

In their logic - if you are here for work and thats the justification for your long term stay = get a non-b visa.

if you are here for your family = get non-o thai wife and anyway you are here to stay.

if you work overseas - get DTV.

I can see the logic as it applies to the majority of cases. you are an exception so present this to the imm officer and ask for consideration. Just be ready to get a "change your plans" response, and remember it has nothing to do with you, its how they are wired.

OP
Ben Horovitz yes I agree, let's see how accommodating they are when it comes to renewal / extension time and me providing dates when I'm here during my busy work schedule so they can do their house visits, and also issue extension stamp etc.

I'm anticipating a few close calls in regards to getting it done before leaving from time to time.

Yes I agree my case is not the norm or majority.

If I have to change to a retirement visa then so be it as they seem to issue that stamp the same day when you apply for extension.

Every year you’ll get an under consideration stamp not a big deal

Bob D'Andrea yes but I'll have to time it with my work schedule when I put in the application and when that 1 month is up and make sure as much as I can that I'm not away, by the looks of it.

1 month pending approval, what's the problem, my 6th time coming up in about a month.

Be aware that if you plan to leave Thailand between your application and the time you need to return to get the actual extension stamped in your passport you will need a re-entry permit or your application will become void. You also need to discuss any trip you have planned with your immigration office as they'll most likely want to visit you at home to verify your living arrangements

why would a person be leaving Thailand during the month pending process, which could include a home visit.

Graeme Drake I had to return to the UK for my mother's funeral. As long as you let them know, use a re-entry permit, and return before the 'under consideration' stamp runs out, it is not a problem.

It's not the first extension. It's every extension when based on marriage. Local immigration offices are not permitted to process marriage extensions. They have to be sent to the district office. Every marriage extension, from every immigration office in Thailand, receives an "under consideration" period between 1-2 months long. It's also normal to receive a home visit and inspection during this time.

so if one has a schedule of work sometimes outside of Thailand and is not in the country when said 1 month 'consideration/processing time' is due what usually happens?

@Jason ******
you tell that to immigration when you're applying for your extension and see if they can try to get it processed faster, or give you a longer consideration period. Otherwise if you're not back to Thailand before the under consideration period ends, you lose your extension and must start over with a new non-O visa.
