I'm not sure how long Savannakhet have been applying this.

I've just noticed it listed on Bangkok Visa run site.

I've no idea regarding Vientiane as they no longer go there.

so you don't need an appointment if applying for non-o visa? I don't even see anywhere on the Savannakhet thai consulate website to book appointments.

The "booking required" is to use the visa run service, not to get the visa in Savannakhet.

Savannakhet doesn't use appointments, that's Vientiane that requires it

perhaps it means a booking is required for the visa run service, which I assumed would always be required, and not a booking at the consulate.

ok. A bit confusing becasue this post specifically says Savannakhet/Laos requires it without mentioning Vientiane. Makes one wonder how trustworthy the other info is that was taken from that website.

I can confirm that the info is very recent and valid. No issue if you apply for Non-O, but major issue if you are trying to get tourist visa with previous history of many Covid extensions, Ed or Volunteer visa.
