Hi everyone πŸ‘‹ I will be traveling from the US to Thailand on August 27th. What are the current requirements? Do I need to get a covid test before departure? Do I need to get health insurance? I have an elite visa. Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
As of August 2023, there are no current travel requirements for entering Thailand, including no need for a COVID-19 test or health insurance. Despite this, many locals, particularly in urban areas like Bangkok, still wear masks publicly, though it's not mandated. Comments indicate that while mask-wearing is prevalent among Thais, it may stem from social conditioning rather than mandatory regulations. Travelers with an elite visa can proceed without additional restrictions.

Yes proof of at least 4 booster shots πŸ˜†

Well, a famous doctor at Siriraj hospital did make the remark last year (back around June) that in his opinion, people shouldn't be allowed in quarantine free without proof of at least one booster.

If this medic were a politician and had his way, I'm sure that would have been made the rule.

No masks needed either although once you're on the ground you'll feel as though you were transported back to 2020, since most Thais (certainly in greater Bangkok anyway) still wear masks especially indoors. They're living in some kind of alternate universe or they just love wearing masks. It's totally weird.

Go to a mall and you'll find virtually 100% of employees wearing masks, while among Thai customers the percentage will vary between 75-85%.

they have worn masks for years for pollution, I don't think that number has changed much.

The shopping centres are a different story. Agreed, I think they made to by the centre or employer, I feel that 75% of the employees would not wear if they had a choice even with somewhat of a high risk with contact and isolation inside the centre using the same air conditioning for the entire centre. πŸ‘

I think the vast majority would still wear masks even if not mandated, which is based on the simple fact 75-85% of customers/shoppers wear them. Why would employees act any different? Shoppers don't need to wear masks, yet the majority either choose to, or are conditioned to wear one.. hence the same pressure would be applied to shop employees. Therefore, I'd say 10-15% of employees would take off their masks if allowed to. Certainly not 75%. Even if they don't like wearing them (although i think most do) social pressure, not wanting to stand out will ensure they do. Now this social pressure is subtle. At this point, no one's going to say anything to your face. Besides, Thais aren't confrontational and thus even during the dark days of the mandate, few Thais lambasted their fellow Thais or foreigners for not wearing masks. Those that did, made the news for being Covid Karens.

At this point, it would be silly to say anything, the mandate is over, plenty of people not wearing masks even if still a minority (unless you go to the south or the islands where it's clearly a small minority who still wear one).

The thing is, Thais have very low levels of self-esteem and seem overly concerned with how they believe they are perceived by others.

I wonder if people would wear a Mask if they were aware of the fact that wearing a Mask increases the intake of Carbon Dioxide by at least 10%? That's definitely not healthy, especially if it isn't really necessary to wear one.

Thats an excellent point.

I knew that fact because I had a Supervisor at work when Covid-19 started, who is Anti -Vaccinations. He was someone who does a heck of research on things and told me that fact, as something he found out interesting about Mask wearing. This fact wouldn't apply to N95 masks that have an exhalation valve as one wouldn't be inhaling their exhaled breath, or at least not so much of it.

I've done a lot of research too, and have also become aware of such facts. It's also common sense really. You have something in front of your face blocking your ability to properly inhale and exhale fresh air. The result will naturally be reduced oxygen intake but also increased carbon dioxide intake. This, regardless of air pockets around the mask, since they rarely create a perfect seal. Surgical masks definitely can't, since they're naturally flimsy and are really intended more as a spit guard.

Nonsense. If most Thais wore masks before Covid I must have missed that. Perhaps 0.5% of Thais ever wore a mask, especially indoors prior to January 2020.

I don't recall ever being served by a mask wearing shopkeeper, supermarket clerk or even immigration officer before 2020.

Thais love masks because they've been conditioned to wear them. Not because they were used to wearing them before 2020.

In fact, before 2020, those working in professions where wearing a mask would have been beneficial or made sense (such as, while working in dusty environments) rarely took such precautions.

I remember having some masks with me to put on while helping to lift some bags full of plants full of fine soil dust, while the Burmese laborers who work in that environment never wore one! This was in 2014. I would put on a mask for the 2 minutes it took me to help lift these heavy bags onto my truck.

Now the situation is reversed: Thais mindlessly wear masks in all situations despite not being warranted anymore.

The Cambodian grounds keeper in my moo baan now wears a mask (often under his nose) most of the time, whereas during Covid restrictions, he rarely did! It's like he started wearing the mask all the time, around July 2022. That just doesn't make any sense!

The Thai government encouraged businesses to switch to mask making and importing as there was big money to be made. Companies imported billions of the things and production machinery was sourced at great expense. Until those are life expired and the billions of masks sold Thais will continue to be encouraged to wear them at all times. If not the government might be sued !!

Still, it's a bit strange, because the mask mandate was lifted long ago, so can't see such a lawsuit as being successful. Would probably be thrown out of court on day 1. If the lawsuit had been filed 18 months ago, different story.

@Nick ***************
You mean the government will be sued by the mask makers?
Paul *******
@Nick ***************
Haha lol, good point. However, it's a never ending cycle because masks keep being made so I guess it's permanent masks now for all service employees and voluntarily, for most Thai civilians.
Paul *******
No. The Covid hoax is finally behind us, or at least it appears to be. Some news circulating of new mask restrictions and then travel/lockdowns by December, but it isn't verifiable at this stage and probably just a rumor taken out of context.
Michael ********
Nope none of that anymore
