Are border runs limited to 2 per calendar year?

I've heard that limit is only for land crossings, and border runs *by air* don't have that limit.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation addresses the rules surrounding border runs in Thailand, specifically the limits associated with land versus air crossings. Comments confirm that while land crossings for visa exemptions are limited to two per calendar year, air border runs do not have a defined limit. However, frequent border runs may raise questions at immigration, leading to potential denial of entry. A user's experience highlights that excessive visa runs can trigger scrutiny, and a senior immigration officer advised leaving Thailand for a longer duration to avoid complications.

EDITED: I got halted in Don Meuang 2 weeks ago. I’m a Malaysian with a Spouse visa previously. I left the Kingdom to Penang when my Visa expired in November and came back in 3 days. Then left again for Kuala Lumpur when my Visa Free 45 days was about to end to go back home and stayed in Kuala Lumpur for 4 days. When I arrived, immigration officer halted me and questioned me if I was doing a Visa run. So I explained that I wasn’t and merely because I had some matters to take care of back at home and I will be leaving again on Chinese New Year which is 2 weeks after the arrival. Showed my return ticket, but still got investigated. Finally, they escalate me to one of their senior officers, and they let me through after a 15 minute chat. What I am told by the senior officer is that rules are very tight now, if you do two Visa runs (technically leaving the kingdom for a couple of days and returning) as a continuation of your Visa, it will trigger a red flag on the system. I was recommended to leave the Kingdom for at least a 30 day interval. The logic given by the senior officer is that it would be unfair for those who actually applied for Long Stay Visas if we use the 45 days Visa Free which is intended for Travel use as a method of long stay in the Kingdom.

I am in the exact same boat. My 45 day stamp is expiring on 8 February. Do you think immigration will refuse my 30 day extension? I plan on visiting a friend in the Philippines for a few months after the 30 day extension.

Visa exempt entries at a land border are limited to 2 per year. There are no other limits but as Stuart says, eventually you will get pulled up.

Border runs by air have no technical limit. That said at some point you’re going to be pulled over and questioned and potentially denied entry. After how many times is anyone’s guess.
