What are the current requirements for applying for an E-Visa from the USA, including tax return submissions at the Los Angeles consulate?

Has anyone applied via E-Visa from USA recently? My friend said they’re asking for IRS tax returns and that it takes months, but not sure if that’s the case. I’d apply through the Los Angeles consulate.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent applicants for the E-Visa through the Los Angeles consulate report being asked for IRS tax returns, even though there are no specified income requirements. The process appears to take a considerable amount of time, with some individuals still waiting for responses weeks after submission. This requirement also seems to vary, as others wonder if different locations such as Taiwan would have similar documentation requests. Overall, there is confusion and frustration among applicants regarding the necessity of these tax documents.

DC embassy is asking for tax returns. Seems odd when there's no income requirements 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agreed it’s a strange request.

so unfortunately it seems like Americans applying on the E visa within America have to provide tax documents, or at least some Americans. Strange. I wonder if Thailand has a tax plan in Thailand for those that are on this visa?

Anonymous participant No for the second question.

I am in process now for LA.

Yes, the tax return was asked for on the second round. It’s not on the original application.

I see, thanks for the update! So it seems like you apply and then they ask for several more documents?

Anonymous participant that’s what is happening with my application.

My follow up question would be, if I applied in Taiwan would they still ask for tax returns and other nonsense extra documents?
Paul *******
Anonymous participant No. Taiwan definitely won't ask.

Thanks, which embassy or consulate are you applying through in USA?
James ********
Anonymous participant you must use the one assigned to your State in the USA

yes I know I’m just curious which one he used, I’d have to use L.A., and the requirements can change on location. In either case I’m now leaning towards to Taiwan to get it done quickly without excessive irs tax paperwork nonsense

Yea apparently LA embassy is asking for tax returns, someone I know applied for soft power and was asked for them

that’s crazy, thanks for the update. I might apply from Taiwan then.

@Andrew ******
was that work cation or soft power?
Andrew *******
@Tod ********
soft power oddly enough.

@Andrew ******
😮 wow that doesn't even make sense as long as you had the documentation for the reason and the funds in your bank. 😕

Thanx for that
Andrew *******
@Tod ********
update. They approved all those documents but then asked for bank balance of $17,000 usd as I guess USD has gone down vs the Baht since application was submitted.
Tod *********
@Andrew ******
yep used to be 16K USD for applying for the DTV in the US, now that the baht is so strong (or the dollar is so weak 😛 ) I'm not surprised they increased it
Andrew *******
@Tod ********
I know, I thought maybe he applied for the incorrect option but not as he submitted all the soft power documents at the same time. He had to submit a W2 etc
Tod *********
your friend is confused (or perhaps I am 😉 )

I was thinking that or his friends that apparently tried have issues with their applications… That being said I did see that one person on this group said the Thai embassy in DC requested a tax return but maybe they didn’t provide sufficient proof of income..?
