What are the considerations when applying for a DTV visa in Thailand while planning to use Thai cooking as the basis?

Dear all, I’ve read through many posts about Vietnam (my choice is HCMC) and general info, I still have a few questions as I prepare my application.

I’ve lived and worked in Thailand for several years at a large company - my funds (several mb) sit in a Thai bank account.

I’m looking to apply for a DTV for my family:

1. Is it OK to have the funds in a Thai bank account? I have prepared documents showing payslips and details of my severance package. (I’m told this shows the income is legal, stable and mine (not borrowed))

2. I will use SOFT POWER Thai cooking for my application and list myself as unemployed. I have written that I am taking a career break. Will this flag any questions? I plan to use House of Taste.

3. I have a property in Bangkok which is our place of residence - in the application I put “Own Property” as proposed place of residence when in Thailand. I’m unsure whether this strengthens or makes my application questionable? Should I just list Private Property?

I have put an address in my home country as my permanent address and the hotel I plan to stay in HCMC as my current location. Is this correct, even if I have lived in Thailand for a very long time, I’m told best not to use that address as my permanent address.

4. IF ASKED what I plan to do after the course ends, my actual plan is to legally start a business in SEA with a Thai office and/or potentially apply for the LTR (so DTV is more a bridging visa to ensure family stability while I handle the other components). Can I be honest here? I’m not sure how to respond for the purpose of getting the DTV?

5. Dependants - I have an infant and have been advised to group the baby on my application; however for my spouse and other children, to wait till I am approved. Has anyone had an experience here that they can share? I was hoping to add my other children on my application too and process spouse separately? Not sure if anyone has any feedback on this?

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

To bring all this pressure off you that you created, your wife gets her dtv first taking cooking classes. After she gets her dtv, then she adds you as spouse. That takes all the pressure off you. Then she adds the kids as dependents. That would work very nicely, and fit your plans. If you did get any kind of working arrangements inside Thailand, then it would only affect your spouse dtv status, and not everyone else if it was your first dtv everyone else's was tied to. Just saying. They are all keeping their dtvs no matter what you personally do, with no extra paperwork. You could always come back on a spouse dtv with no problem if things didn't work out business wise. Also, and not to be sexist, but the initial application could have more weight if the wife, and not the husband, was signing up to take Thai cooking classes? Thailand is very conservative in that respect.

so…I am a woman; and my entire family have been on my dependant visa for many years 🙂. All funds are in my name only, so I am sole sponsor. Not sure if that changes anything…positively I hope 🤞🏼 ? We have never had an issue with immigration and we have a great history. I’ve just decided to go this alone without an agent etc and truly the pain is a balance of timing to fit all the eligibility requirements for various visas I’ve looked at. The ‘pressure’ is maintaining stability for the kids as they are in school. An Education visa is our last resort.

As jokingly mentioned by Robert, my intention is not to deceive but rather what is and is not worth mentioning to secure the DTV. I’ve been burned in the past by providing too much information.

JoyfulLychee8872 I don't think it will work if You intend to tell them that you will start a new business in Thailand ("Thai office") in the near future because the whole point of the visa is remote work (employed by foreign business or contracts with foreign clients). They're going to ask you how you will support yourself or (some embassies reportedly asked) what your work is going to be after your course ends which I assume they're going to want to know for the next 5 years. Starting a business in Thailand within those 5 years is going to raise a flag. Let's say for an example you plan to start a business in 2 years. There is no DTV Visa for 2 years and they will probably be hesitant to give you 5 years.

Someone reported being rejected and said his cover letter explained he was coming for market research for his business in another country that he can operate remotely and planned for the possibility of starting a business later in Thailand. He complained he didn't understand why he was rejected. Of course there's no way to really know why. But when pointing out that market research is not remote work and leads to establishment of a local business, he kept saying but he's running his remote business, and doesn't see the contradiction.

You apply for each individual separately. Csnt apply for your dependents until you have your DTV

DTV_BegPecker thanks, I have separate applications set up; but have been told there is an option to group before submitting? (I haven’t got to that stage yet in the system to see this for myself). I was advised to group my infant’s application with mine (as I’ll be travelling with them when I do my application). The rest of my family can apply later…however I wanted to see if it was possible to group my minor children too, to streamline the logistics over this school break. No biggie if not.

1. Yes, any bank will do with minimum 500.000 thb per application

2. The whole family stops working for nearly 6 years and living of the severance package. Yep, sounds easy to do.

3. You have property in Bangkok, you live and reside in Bangkok, so it make no sense to make up an addres in another country

4. There are 3 purposes, choose the one which fits, cooking a few days to avoid your intentions to set up a new company does not sound legit,

5. a Visa is personal, you can NOT add family members, children or friends.

At the end of each application you sign all answers are true and correct,

I love cooking to avoid workcation, I live in xxx country to avoid using Bangkok might seem true and corect to you or anonymous participants, but how does the Embassy and later Immigration think about it.

thanks. My BKK condo will be my intended address to stay; but as I am supposed be a tourist, the assumption is that my home country address should be listed as my permanent address on the form? Do I understand this correctly. I have no issues listing my BKK address but I’m also not sure how an IO would view it, if DTV is technically a tourist visa? Hence why I ask the Q.

As for your comments about whole family taking a vacation, well my Q is how do they expect people to survive on 500k for 5 years on soft power? Yet I’ve seen some apply for soft power, mention revenue sources and then get rejected, only to be advised not to mention sources of income when applying for soft power?!

My assumption is that at some point an applicant will work remotely and soft power/remote work are just the 2 available methods in which to obtain the DTV visa…but the same rules and expectations applies to all holders regardless of how you obtained it? Am I correct here?

In my case, my “remote work” is still early stages and so I don’t have enough history to use, hence the soft power route. I’d be willing to switch to workcation/remote at a later stage, but don’t see its a necessity when already approved?! Recently it seems embassies are asking for the long term plan, what are they expecting people to reply? That said, I have more than 10x the financial requirement…so expect that to be of some help here as it’s twice what’s needed to cover the whole family.

I have another visa option but DTV seems best suited for now.

DTV is a DTV visa, not a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, big difference even when some anonymous people think otherwise.

Your home address is your home addres and if that is in Bangkok it is in Bangkok.

But your choice to answer correct and true or as you wish.

How they expect is not the correct question, YOU apply so YOU should explain how YOU expect to live nearly 6 years without working.

It is your choice to answer correct and true or as you wish.

No, there is a different between purpose workcation and purpose soft power, IF as some anonymous people think and type it all is the same, why is there a different purpose?

Again your choice to answer correct and true or as you wish.

I see more and more Embassies asking for income on long term working, they do NOT mention what type of DTV you get, I guess all apply and meet the requirements for Workcation and without telling everybody is happy,

A win win situation.
