Hi guys I have a banking question for Aussie expats living in Thailand I started sending some small amounts of money to my thai account then yesterday I was blocked by my bank in Australia and I spent nearly 1hr on the phone trying to explain what the money was for. They have unblocked it now but they said there was no guarantee it won't happen again also do you guys always get an sms code sent to your phone before the money is sent
Answer summary
Expat Australians living in Thailand often encounter issues when transferring money to their Thai bank accounts from Australia, frequently facing blocks or requests for SMS verification codes from their banks due to anti-fraud measures. Many expats suggest using services like Wise, Remitly, or Revolut as more efficient alternatives to traditional bank transfers, noting better exchange rates and lower fees. It's recommended to transfer to a Wise account first before sending money to Thai accounts to avoid complications. Additionally, consistently transferring in larger sums rather than small amounts may reduce the frequency of bank inquiries.

Typical that hese banks do not like you using your own money for what you want and actively hinder you at your expense to rectify the problem. I paid for something by card and tried to get the payment reversed as i thought it was a scam when i did not get a confirmation email and a message to contact the company which denied receiving a payment they said let it go through then claim refund by opening a claim the proceeded to say it was my fault. I tranferred all money to a different bank and received many messages from the bank saying it could be a scam bloody ironic and cheeky. I use the bank minimally now just so it costs them money to maintain the admin for the account.

We are with Westpac. I do our monthly visa transfers from our Westpac account to our Australian Wise currency account. I then transfer from my Aus $ account to our Thai bank account in THB. Never get an OTP for that.

I use WISE. I transfer from my westpac account to my Kasikorn account using WISE. It works fine providing I don't try to transfer too big an amount. I keep it to $500 each transfer. I can do multiple times in one day but if I try for $1,000, westpac won't allow it. I get a message saying to contact westpac. I just wait until the next day and it's working again.

No problems with Australian bank, use the App no code sent to phone then, do transfer early morning, usually in thai bank by arvo.

I am an Australian in Thailand. I use Wise to transfer to my Thai bank. I bank with Commonwealth in Aus and just do bank transfer to Wises Commonwealth account. Once they have the money they initiate the transfer. In Aus because it's transfer Commonwealth bank to Commonwealth bank there has never been a problem.

From OZ there is a simple method via our local Melbourne thai grocery.

He has the perfect system for us to receive money into our thai acct... (This requires a good trust in your local grocer)... you hand him the cash whether that be 1000 or
*****
no matter. You jot senders name and Oz ph number and thai cct details and thai ph number if you have one. He photos and sms this to family co-part in thsiland. His fhsi family Transferz the converted amount from their LOS acct into yours... that simple... no actual money leaves hone nor enters thailand. The Rates are always a point better than banks and the cost to send is zero!! We funded the new 1.8Mbaht pattaya apartment purchase using this for most of the Balance.

No1 is to stop sending from 'your name' here to 'your name' there... this has been getting flagged for some years... if you have someone you can trust over there, send to them and they can transfer to your acct locally there... OR more simply use someone else's name to SEND it from here...

It's all today with the way the world is now, money laundering and illegal activities. When I arrived from NZ opened a bank acc and regularly transfer money from.NZ to my Tjsi bank using Wise. My NZ bank questioned this and explained living in Thailand, had to full out forms and generally explain that now I live here after that declared a non-resident for tax in NZ now no problems.

I agree that the banks have your safety in mind, but it is annoying.

I had problems in NZ with the BNZ because I was sending money to various people in Thailand and they suspected fraud. Prior to that I sent money through Western Union to a friend in Thailand who didn't have a bank account and I received a phone call from the bank within a couple of minutes. And afterwards, when I was in the process of sending the money, Western Union rang to check me out.

Hopefully it has all been settled and I will have no more problems

I always get an sms code from my bank in Canada, I experienced the same situation you are in, the banks do that to protect you as a customer from fraudulent activity or scams, and most of the time it would happen to me on larger amounts like $9000 or even $5000. What I do is I put my Canadian sim in my phone I do the transaction from my laptop via Wise and I wait for a message to appear on my phone, if my Thai account sends me a message saying the money was transferred then I disregard and put my Thai sim back in. But yes it was a pain in the ??? At first.

I never use my OZ bank, poor exchange rate, high transfer fee and up to 5 days delay. Use Wise, good rate, low fee and instant transfer, Initially required OTP ( a pain in the arse if living o/s) managed to get my bank to put a waiver on transactions through them.

I would suggest not using your bank but use someone like Revolut, Remittley, or Wise.

Dave Cottom but anyway the money comes from a bank first, then to Wise account or transferred on Wise. Anyway, the bank is the starting point.
