What are the best options to extend my stay in Thailand until January 1, 2019, without a retirement visa?

For tax implication reasons, I don't want to do the retirement visa until after Jan 1 when my distributions number resets to zero. I don't have enough income to satisfy the requirement so have to use combo income and bank holdings. I am now on a tourist exempt obtained at Ventianne crossing (my second so I know no more of these). What is the groups suggestion that I do to remain in Thailand until Jan 1 2019 or beyond. I know all the items necessary for retirement visa so we don't need to waste time with that. I only would like ideas about the best ways to stay here until Jan 1, 2019. TIA everyone for your always good advice. JB

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking guidance on how to remain in Thailand until January 1, 2019, without applying for a retirement visa yet due to tax implications and income requirements. Suggestions from the community include obtaining a single entry tourist visa, using a 60-day tourist visa from a Thai consulate, or flying out and back in to utilize future visa exemptions. The user has already exhausted the 30-day visa exempt entries.

You're only trying to buy time for the next 6 months anyway. You could use a combination of single entry tourist visas or 30 day visa exempt entries (although you mention you've used your two 30 day visa exempt entries by land this year) so you'll have to fly in to get them.

OK, probably better for Laos then. thanks. I will just vacation in SR, soak up Angkor Wat 2 times and have fun with the woman. She has a shopping itch she needs to scratch. LOL

the travel companies up there can take your passport down to Phnom Penh and get a tourist visa from the thai consulate there. Keep in mind that thai consulate is no nonsense and you tick all the boxes as far as the requirements for the visa or you don't get it. (proof of 20K baht in the bank, proof of onward travel, proof of a hotel booking)

the consulate in Vientiane requires NONE of those 3-proof-ofz. Just your passport, copies, the application and 1000baht. It's a cake walk using them for a single entry tourist visa

Good, very good. I am going to Cambodia, but to Siem Reap, not PP. But I read there are agencies that can do the consulate thing for you from SR. I will look into that right away when I get there. If not, will go to Ventianne for a few days and get it that way through the consulate. No worries. I just wanted to make sure I ran this stuff past you guys as due diligence. Thanks again. JB

get a single entry tourist visa from a nearby thai consulate, that gets you 60 days, extend it by 30 more days, then repeat it again. That gets you six months of stay

Yep, thatz right Tod. 2 land entrances are done. Flying in and out is OK. I just have to find the least expensive, I am only partly made of money, despite my girlfriend's thoughts of the opposite. LOL Thanks. Again.

Single entry tourist visa is probably your best option, or fly out/in of the country for more visa exempts.

thanks SG, that was a couple of things I was looking at. I do want to travel around SE Asia, so that is not a problem. Single entry could be good also. I am just looking for the best options. Thanks for the input. JB

If you don’t have enough income, why is tax a problem. Trying to gain knowledge on this.

Your health insurance premiums ARE deductible if that helps.

Well at least as a retiree they cut me a little slack. Senility and all that. However they do lose patience after 2 years.

I have it worse than that. I did not do last year's tax yet. Not bad. But, for 2015, I was, letz say, not paying attention. The state of california garnished 1500$ out of my banking account with a 75$ charge to do so. I did not file taxes for that year, but I had O (zero) income. I lived on my marriage settlement, so it iz easy to prove. But now they have the money and getting it back will be oh so easy, I am sure. They guestimated what I made from previous years and just took the money. now, I could have been paying attention. But I wasn't, so now I have this problem. And trying to fix this from thailand. Well, can be done, but see above, will not be easy. LOL Itz my own darn fault, too. JB

I wouldn't know any of this IRS crap either but I just spent several extremely expensive painful hours with my tax accountant filing the last 2 years taxes.

Having a heart failure 5 days after I got to Thailand without having the Volunteer group having me on International Insurance was the big hurt. Everything was out of pocket. Now, not as bad as being in the US, but still money I did not expect to be spending. So, thatz kinda why I need a little discipline. I did not party all the money away. Kinda spent money to save my life. LOL JB

Thanks for the info, MH. I did not know that. I am behind in my IRS reading. Itz so easy to put off. Fortunately, people like yourself save me from myself. i will look into it. But itz still not a problem to get visas that carry me into next year. I have yanked enough money out this year anyway. It's time I had a little discipline and stop spending money like a drunken sailor. LOL Thanks again. JB

you do realize standard exemptions doubled this year. You lose mortgage interest deduction also. Also business deductions, health care cost deductions have changed.

Don't assume the rules are the same as 2017. Huge differences occurred in the past year. Also as a US citizen you don't have to "prove" income but instead can just swear to it at the consulate/embassy and fill out the appropriate forms.

Call your tax accountant or see if you can get a 2018 schedule before assuming you need to withdraw savings or you will take a bigger hit if you do.

Well, I have to start somewhere. Limiting taxes in the states is first. Will worry about Thailand after that. Thanks for the assistance. JB

@Jackie *****
JB, ok I get it. But the money you pay in tax there I think you will compensate here.

Itz not like that. I get Social Security. Itz not enough to be the only source for the retirement visa. I have to use combo, bank and income. Now, to get the bank money, I have to take a distribution from my retirement funds. I have taken a bunch this year already and those are taxable monies from distribution since I was able to save them tax free. Getting the money for retirement monies for this year will put me in a higher tax bracket. I don't want this. Now, Jan 1, the IRS resets that number to 0, so I will take money out then and try to keep distributions down over the following year so as to minimize taxes. OK? JB
