Hello there, asking for advice regarding money transfers to the EU (Austria). I have been sending money to my daughter (just small amounts, less than EUR 800 every other month) via Western Union without any problems. Last Thursday they suddenly declined and asked me to fill in a document requiring the birth certificate of my daughter, my pension certificate and what not. I find that a bit too much, especially given the fact that they accept payments into Thailand without much ado. Anybody knows a way around or a better option to send money to the EU? My bank, Krungsri, is asking horrendous fees.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat in Thailand seeking to send money to their daughter in Austria is facing challenges with Western Union, which recently requested excessive documentation for transfers. This has prompted the search for alternative methods. Suggestions from the community include using money transfer services like Wise, Revolut, XE, and Deemoney—each noted for lower fees compared to traditional banking methods. Users also mention potential issues with documentation requirements for services like Wise, but several express satisfaction with low fees and reliability. Additional queries about the banking system in Austria and transfer logistics from Thailand were raised.
Ich sende seit Jahren mit WISE und Remitly. Geringe Gebühren, Geld ist sofort da. Und sie Bangkok Bank verlangt grundsätzlich gar nichts dafür. Bin überrascht, die Krungsri verlangt wirklich was ?????
First of all, there is only ONE way with WISE to send Euro to a Euro bank account from y'r Thai bank account and that is when you have a THAI Mastercard.
Sorry but I am a bit confused when you say "the fact they accept payments into Thailand". You mean transfer ? Or transfer with Western Union ? Or Thai payments from out of a Euro country ? I would think that you have a bank account in y'r home country then ? If so, why not transfer from there ? Again sorry if I misunderstood.
Oh, no problem. Aii, I understand 🙄. I don't know if another brand bank has less fees 🤷♂️ Also don't know the costs with my Thai mastercard with Wise. I just tested it with 500€ once if it worked. I read many times 'Deemoney' (app) works with Thai baht to Euro. Maybe just try. Good luck !🙏
My Austrian bank account is nearly inactive as they transfer my pension to my Thai FCD account. So I sometimes have to transfer some money from here (I know that's not optimal but my pension insurance insists on sending the money here). Anyway, thanks for the time you took.
