do NOT attempt to gain 6 months out of visa-exempt entries. Because that holds the risk of being pulled aside at the border and asked for your travel purpose. If you would reply "I have a house in Thailand", you will most definitely be denied entry, because in this situation you would be misusing a touristic entry for a longstay in ThailandNongnuch ********

Visa-wise, you don’t have too many options. The easiest and most convenient in your case would be:***you could apply for the 6-months multi-entry Tourist Visa (METV), both of you individually, in the Thai E-visa online system in your home country.
It gives you 60 days stay permit on each entry, the 60 days can be extended by 30 more days on Immigration for 1900 THB, and before the stay permit expires, you need to do a border run to activate the next 60 days
You can apply for the METV every other year, I do not see a problem, because you stay outside of Thailand for the next 6 months
