Should I choose the 6-month MET visa or the Non-O visa for an annual stay in Thailand?

We are looking to spend 6 months in Thailand, and maybe every year. Are we better to get the 6 month tourist MET visa in Australia or the Non O in Australia and just not extend it with the cash deposit. Does one have more benefits or advantages? Thank you for advice.
Answer summary
The discussion centers around whether to opt for the 6-month Tourist MET visa or the Non-O visa for an annual 6-month stay in Thailand. The MET visa allows for a total of 6 months with multiple entries, while the Non-O, though granting 90 days initially, requires extensions or a financial commitment tied to retirement. Users suggest that the MET visa is more suited for those not seeking long-term retirement plans, as it offers flexibility with extensions and entry returns, making it the preferable choice for annual temporary stays.

I use the non-O (retired, over 50). Works fine, gives me 6 months each year (2 x 90 day stays)

If you want 3 months get a non-o based on being over 50, showing funds in your home country.

If you want 6 months, METV will work with at least one border bounce.

I’d go with the METV if your plan is simply to spend around six months in Thailand each year.

The advantage people sometimes miss is that each entry gives you 60 days, and before that expires you can normally go to Immigration, pay ฿1,900, and extend for another 30 days. So one entry can effectively give you 90 days.

You can then leave Thailand, come back in while the METV is still valid, and receive another 60 days, again with the option to extend by 30 days.

So for a six-month stay, it can work very neatly:

60 days + 30-day extension → leave/re-enter → 60 days + 30-day extension.

A Non-O makes more sense if you specifically want to move towards retirement status or another long-term non-immigrant arrangement. But if the intention is simply six months in Thailand and six months back home each year, I’d personally choose the METV. It fits the purpose better and avoids unnecessarily setting yourself up for the retirement-extension requirements.

Same here, we want to do the same, don’t forget if you stay 6 months it affects your age pension.

Lorraine Newman hi Lorraine. Interesting post reply btw. Id like ask--- I'm also a ppm Pom 😀 and a Paussie in Melbourne. 5 years to retirement age here then I'll be 25 out of the 35 qualifying years for the Aussie pension if i spend more than 6 months in Thailand. Does your hubby get a full Aussie pension if he spends under 6 months in Thailand ?And is that a tax year or calender year. Thanks in advance

Non O will give only 90 days unless you get the one year extension of stay.

METV will give you the 6 months but you will have to leave Thailand then return.

I'm going to follow for info on this. As my husband & I ( both 68yrs young)want to get out of the Aussie winter 🥶 for 3-6 months & stay in Hua Hin.

Susie Dolling i do up to 6 months at a time in Thailand too and through our winter. The cheapest way is a $300 METV. Each entry gives you 60 days, then you can extend it for 1900 baht at local immigration. After that you need to leave the country and come back and go through the same process which will give you 6 months. I use to do that and did it many times but now I don't want to leave so I did a retirement visa. That way is much easier but you need 800k tied up in a Thai bank. The choice is for you and your husband to decide whether you would be happy to do those side trips. Good luck.

Susie Dolling by the way, even though the Thai Government have decided to reduce the 60 day visa exempt to 30 days it has still not officially come in. So if by some miracle it is still 60 days visa exempt next year you won't need any visa. Just saying as sometimes they don't follow through, who knows.
