I will be in Phuket for about 2 months soon. Is it better to rent a scooter long term or buy one? What are the best ways to find one to buy if I go that way? Is my US drivers license enough to legally drive?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on whether it is better for an expat staying in Phuket for two months to rent or buy a scooter. Most comments suggest renting due to the short duration of stay, with advice on the legality of driving with a US license, and obtaining an International Drivers Permit (IDP). Some users mention the complications of buying a scooter such as insurance and registration issues. There is also useful information about rental prices, potential fees, and tips for ensuring a safe and compliant rental experience.

You need a motorcycle license to legally drive. I doubt many people drive legally.
Your next best option is an International Drivers Permit... They're almost useless but some people like to have them.. It will require the motorcycle endorsement, which means you need to already have a motorcycle license in the US., To get a IDP - go to your local AAA.
The thing this is - the bribes range from $15 - $100 depending on how bad the get you. It cost $100 for no license, no paperwork no helmet, and illegal turn (or something). If you can manage to keep your infractions to a minimum then the bribe will be much cheaper. If you get the license and they give you a ticket and you choose to fight it, you will spend the afternoon at the police station waiting and doing paperwork. Much easier just pay the fine and enjoy your day.
You can rent motorcycle for 4 or 5,000 baht.
The few motorcycle shops I talked to have waitlists so it may not be possible buy brand new.

You can ‘buy’ it get the green book , no need to register it. When you sell it just give the green book to new owner.

Need IDP….cheap to get before arriving and will give u peace of mind while driving. Renting would be best for only a 2 months stay. When u go thru a police check they will fine for no IDP and helmet 1000 baht. Look around as prices vary…make sure u get a good newer bike with newer tires ( check for bald tires..it does rain even in peak season ) Also prices will double come November as rental agencies get greedy. Use to rent for 2500 baht a month for newer click 160 and come peak season they want 5000 baht a month. For 2 months u should be able to negotiate a better deal …just look around there’s so many rental places
I don't know how strong the used sale market is and how nice the rentals are. If the rentals are junk and I can buy something really nice new and then sell it for most of what I paid 2 months later, that is a deal.
Best way go into a shop pay the money and ride away , But I would rent

Yes you can buy one and register it in your name. Even on a visa exempt. Just get a resident certificate from immigration. If you buy from an officialndealer some even do it for you!
really? Not a problem in the Philippines. My 2 month rental at the hotel would count and insurance is easy. Seems like a rental is the best route though.
I can't say for sure but from uk I had to get an international driving licence. I was there for 3 months this year and as with all forang buying anything its complicated and prob just not worth it. I rent a sports bike for 3 months and its expensive so thought of this and its just not worth it. Its far from cheap but saves q headache.

Go to triple AAA and get and international drivers permit.
As long as you have a motorcycle license in the US they'll mark it on your IDP and it will be enough to drive legally in Thailand temporarily. Since you're only going to be on Thailand for 2 months it'll be enough.
