Would it be better for me to get a Digital Nomad Visa or a Retirement Visa?

I'm moving to Thailand and plan to stay there for several years.

I'm 54 years old, have a U.S. passport, and can deposit the required funds in a Thai bank account.

(I just remembered to take care of this, with only one month left before my departure.)

Thank you
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the choice between a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) and a Retirement Visa for a 54-year-old expat from the U.S. planning to stay in Thailand for several years. Most comments suggest that the Retirement Visa is the better option due to fewer restrictions, such as the ability to stay longer without leaving the country. The DTV requires exit every six months and has more limitations. Several commenters emphasize getting the Retirement Visa to enjoy more benefits, including opening a bank account and securing long-term residency.

Check out Vietnam and Malaysia 1st. You are arriving in the middle of a War on Foreigners where every obstacle will be placed in your way and Xenophobia rages throughout the land.

Retirement visa, but, if you're working online, I wouldn't be advertising that. The DTV is a relatively weak, and new, visa and likely to be subject to changes. Of course, there are some hoops to jump through with the retirement visa, but that applies to any visa you get. I think only the LTR visa is exempt from the 90 day reporting

Guess it all depends upon what your definition of "several years" is, as well as whether or not you are willing to leave the country every 6 months. The retirement visa is good for as long as you remain in compliance with the "rules". There is no requirement to leave the country (suggest getting a multiple entry permit so you can travel). With the DTV, it is good for 5 years and you must leave the country every 180 days.

Absolutely a retirement visa. A digital nomad visa has a lot more limitations/inconveniences. Only reason you'd choose the nomad is because you don't qualify for retirement and have no choice, or you have specific work related requirements. Otherwise the retirement is yournto got to visa. Especialky of you can qualify for the LTR one.

If you want to retire, the non immigrat O is your choice. 800k THB and you are fine for the rest of your life for immigration purposes.

But important are also health insurance (take it now when in good health) and cash-flow 🙏.

Retirement visa is the better choice. But, you should start now from the USA. Harder if you come to Thailand first.

Retirement Visa... that was an easy choice for me over any other choices. I easily qualify and has all the features that I need.

It all depends on what you want to do inside Thailand. If you want to work remotely then a DTV based on Workation is really your only choice but really you have to leave Thailand every 6 months and can't get a bankaccount. Else I'd say the retirement visa is a better choice, you can get an annual extension of stay without ever having to leave Thailand, you can open a bank account and so on. Make sure you get the initial visa before you travel
