TLDR : Answer Summary
There are mixed opinions regarding whether Thailand will close after January 10th. As of now, the Test and Go program has been suspended, but the country remains open for those with approved Thailand Pass QR codes. Quarantine measures may be re-evaluated on January 4th due to concerns about the Omicron variant. Travelers should keep updated with official announcements, as the situation is fluid and subject to change.

So how many days do we have to stay quarantine now as we are vaccinated?

I am supposed to go 6 January, have not started the process yet as everything shot down as I was trying to book test and go, now they say I have to do 10 days… it should be 7, but Hotell says 10, trying to get the right information as I am not to sit 10 days if I can do 7, so do anyone have the facts her, I can’t find the specific, I was hoping to do it in Pattaya together with my wife

From my understanding what they're saying on the news they're closing the test and go program. If you've already registered you're able to still come to Thailand but if you're not registered you will not be able to come at this time. Due to Omicron fears.

Currently: 1. Those with a Thailand Pass issued before the suspension last night may still enter under the Test and Go Program, 2. The government is reevaluating on or about January 4th in light of Omicron transmission, 3. There is no change at the moment to the Phuket Sandbox Program, and 4. No “closure” is anticipated, but there may be a return to a quarantine period for those entering through BK. The situation is clearly fluid and the Thai government’s response is similar to other nations. Stay tuned.

When will that time be? They’ve shown zero ability to control the outspread, so how long do we remain shutdown across the globe? This time next year, when the “zeta variant” comes rolling out, are we taking the 5th or 6th jab and then shuttering in our homes to hide from a virus that isn’t killing anybody the flu wouldn’t take out anyway? At some point, enough is enough. There’s a breaking point…if society complies forever, then every democratic notion of “freedom over security” is tossed out the window in favor of public health.

In Thailand specifically, people are starving. Every time they close the border, it’s food out of people’s mouths. The politics are precarious in Bangkok on a good year. It’s just foolish.

My point is the crisis could last forever if the goal is to reduce Covid cases to zero…there’s no sign this is going away. And politically, it’s risky for governments to continue thinking they can keep regulating us into perpetuity. At some point, society will reject it, and you’ll end up with a coup in Bangkok, a Trump in Washington, etc. There has to be an end, particularly when this virus is not particularly deadly to most groups.

also, tell all my friends in hospitality in UK about being open and people getting on with their lives. yeah, I think you're conflating ASQ with sandbox. ASQ is what unvaxxed have to do and, I've not checked yet, but likely vaxxed will have to do in Bangkok, as that was the setup pre test and go. Those hotels are more expensive as they include the testing and full board. Sandbox is just room only (unless.you want board options)and you're free to roam the island from first negative PCR, which is a out 6 hours after arrival. At end of 7 days you get a clearance form and are free to travel wherever you like.

ABSOLUTE CLARIFICATION OF THE NEW RULES

Thank you to our good friend Richard Barrow for helping to put the changes in to plain English

"Announcement

Thailand Pass will be closed for all new Test and Go and Sandbox applications (except Phuket Sandbox), starting from 00.00 hrs. on 22 December 2021 until further notice.

New measures apply for all applicants on Thailand Pass, as follows;

Applicants who have received their Thailand Pass QR Code can enter Thailand under the scheme they have registered.

Applicants who have registered, but have not received their QR Code must wait for their Thailand Pass to be considered / approved. Once approved, they can enter Thailand under the scheme they have registered.

New applicants will not be able to register for Test and Go and Sandbox measures (except Phuket Sandbox). Thailand Pass will only accept new applicants seeking to enter Thailand under Alternative Quarantine (AQ) or Phuket Sandbox only.

Passengers who will arrive in Thailand under Test and Go and Sandbox Programme must undergo their 2nd COVID-19 test using the RT-PCR technique (not ATK self-test) at government-designated facilities (no additional cost).

Thailand Pass will be closed for all new Test and Go and Sandbox applications (except Phuket Sandbox), starting from 00.00 hrs. on 22 December 2021 until further notice.

New measures apply for all applicants on Thailand Pass, as follows;

4. Passengers who will arrive in Thailand under Test and Go and Sandbox Programme must undergo their 2nd COVID-19 test using the RT-PCR technique (not ATK self-test) at government-designated facilities (no additional cost).

Do Not Panic!

To be clear, this is NOT a closure of the borders. It is just a suspension of the Test & Go and the Blue Zone Sandbox (except for Phuket Sandbox) schemes. Everything else will continue as normal.

First the good news, if you are one of 22,000 people who have already applied for a Thailand Pass for Test & Go, Sandbox and Alternative Quarantine, your application is still being processed. If your application is approved, you will be able to come under the original conditions. This means, for Test & Go people, you only need to wait for the results for the first test and then you are free to go. No 7-day quarantine like some media outlets were saying. But you will need to do a second RT-PCR test on Day 7. More on that in a moment.

The bad news is that if your application is rejected after midnight, then you are out of luck. You will need to enter via the Phuket Sandbox or hotel quarantine schemes.

Secondly, the Thailand Pass system is still open for Test & Go applications. So, be quick as you could make it before the midnight deadline. After that time, they will no longer take applications for Test & Go and for Sandbox areas outside of Phuket.

One very important piece of information that the Thai media got wrong is the cut-off date for arriving in Thailand. Basically, there isn’t one. Earlier, the media were saying you must arrive before 10th January if you didn’t want to do quarantine. That is not true. You can arrive on the date that was approved on your application. For example, if you said you are arriving on 25th January, then you still can use Test & Go and only wait one night for the test results.

Many people were asking that if they arrived under Test & Go tomorrow, do they have to do the second RT-PCR test on Day 7. The quick answer to that is no. This is because it is not law yet. The prime minister must first sign the papers and then it must be published in the Royal Gazette. So, if it was published in the gazette on Friday, then anyone arriving on Friday onwards, must do the second test on Day 7. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this will be free. More details on this soon.

So, does this mean there is no Test & Go in the future? No, that is not true as it is just temporarily suspended. In early January, they will re-evaluate the situation and there will be a new announcement.

If I have any further updates, I will post on my social media - Twitter and Facebook. Can I please ask you not to reply to this email with questions. I have already received two hundred emails today and I cannot keep up. Which is why I prefer to answer questions on social media where I can share the answers with everyone. Thanks for your understanding and good luck!"

NOTE - where and how you will have your 2nd RT-PCR test is to be confirmed soon.

Short Answer: Unlikely

Long Answer: Test and Go has just been suspended so going forward one should expect to have to do quarantines for the next several months. Going forward and as I have said for a while now….

Thailand is open but unless you are planning a long (multi-month) stay it likely doesn’t make sense to plan a trip there.

Even with test and go if you or someone near you tested positive it turned your vacation into a nightmare. Sure the positive rate was under 1 in 1,000 for test and go but that’s still pretty high odds your vacation turns into a hospital stay.

@Justin ****************
Fact: Test and Go has been suspended until further notice.

“Further notice” does not give a time frame. No one knows how long it will be suspended for.

“One should expect” does not imply knowledge of the future.

None of us have a clue what will happen in the future. But we can make educated guesses. Which is all my “one should expect” implied.

And since Omicron is relatively new it is IMO smart to assume that “one should expect” quarantines for the next few months. Since it will be weeks until data shows it to be relatively harmless or months for the waves of it pass in various countries.

I’d personally be shocked if Test and Go is opened again in Jan and there is IMO no chance for the remainder of Dec.

When do you think the temporary suspension will end and what would you consider several months?

But i don't hardly believe they will change it. It's just going to be delayed over the next week's month

A basically they returned backwards

People didn't travel much when only Phuket sand box was on

Only test and go made people go. And even then not that many

Either they return test and go. Or forget about tourist this year and i mean 22

I already bought tickets for 17 January

Now i don't know what to do
