Is it true that some visitors to Thailand might not get a stamp in their passport and later face fines?

Please confirm whether TRUE or FALSE. I got stories that said, few Foreigners enter Thailand thru Bangkok Airport immigration but the Immigration Officers somehow miss-out or forget or did not stamps for any other reasons the visitor's passport without the visitors realizing it. A couple of days later, upon departure, whilst going thru the immigration to depart... the Immigration office fines a penalty of few thousands to

the visitors for not making sure of entry stamping... is it true? Seems, its quite viral now on social media of the action taken towards the visitors.
Answer summary
There have been stories circulating that foreign visitors to Thailand sometimes enter without getting their passport stamped by immigration officers, leading to potential fines when leaving the country. However, multiple comments in the community highlight that checking your passport for the correct stamp is crucial and often emphasized the visitor's responsibility in ensuring their entry documentation is correct. Many users suggest that if an error occurs, visitors should promptly return to the immigration office to resolve it. While some acknowledge that mistakes can happen, particularly with new electronic systems, the prevailing consensus is that visitors should always verify their stamp before departing immigration.

It may be true. If you enter through the electronic gate, there is no seal, you cannot check it.

I had a non OA visa. When I landed the guy just stamped and give me 30 days. I didn’t know about until I checked later. I could have gone to immigration to change it, but it was much easier to exit and return because I discovered a week later.

A friend and I came back into Thailand about 6 years ago from Vietnam.

I checked my passport.

All okay.

I asked my friend if he had checked his passport.

He said no.

I told him to look.

He had not been stamped in.

I told him to go back and tell Immigration.

They stamped his passport.

It can and does happen.

It does sometimes happen, a few years back they had made a mistake on the entry stamp, which I hadn't noticed. The IO actually called me a few hours later, really apologetic, it wasn't a major issue as I was on a 5 day trip, so the mistake had no impact. So did t go and return to get a change.

It’s a bit complicated matter when travelling as it’s hard to know if you are supposed to get a stamp and what kind of. I usually do check that I got stamp before getting too far from border control. I’ve never had an issue in Thailand but in Oman I received EXIT-stamp when I was entering that caused some issues later on but luckily it was resolved.

With E-gates I’ve had an issue in Dubai where I entered with E-gate but when departing no entry information could not be found. This caused some delay but luckily I was very early at the airport.

So things happen sometimes

I've gotten a false stamp before, but I always double-check them. I reported it and the senior officer scolded the desk officer... 🤬... and corrected the stamp. I've also had an instance where the officer was about to give me a false stamp coming back from Malaysia, but luckily I understand some Thai and corrected it before it was stamped.

It’s possible off-course but during my years of travelling I never experienced this issue and had only 2 times first hand confirmation of immigration forgetting the stamp.

What happens more is of getting the wrong stamp.

The official record is in the computer. The stamp is just for your record to remind you when to leave by. They should be the same but sometimes they make a mistake and sometimes they forget to stamp. If the stamp is wrong, you need to go back to immigration to verify that they entered it correctly. This should be done ASAP and not later when you run the risk of overstaying your visa.

It can happen

In 25 years here had them stamp me twice incorrectly, they chopped my passport for 30 days even though I was on a work permit

You just have to take your passport to immigration they will sort it out with no fines etc...

It most likely happens more than we think

Paul Anthony McDermott I had the same. Working in Thailand with a one year visa but got stamped in for 30 days. When leaving on my first break got taken aside and questioned. Then to a senior IO. He sorted it and apologised. Thought I was going to miss my flight.

My experience as a DTV holder. There was once when I entered immigration and I flip my passport to the DTV sticker. Mentioned to the officer that I am under DTV visa. He looked at it and stamped a typical 60 day tourist visa for me. As I am not staying too long so I didn’t rectify. Anyone’s guess why he did that but just make sure to check everytime.

I came through with a 90 day visa, but the IMO failed to notice it. I checked before I left the booth. And pointed it out to the officer who kindly added a note and extended my visa to 90 days. ALWAYS check, it’s very easy for the officer to miss your particular requirements.

Nothing viral could topple the news about 9 Indians, booked 3 tents which were supposedly to accomodate 6 people, made lots of noises and disgusting behavior, got themselves removed from the premise, then demanded the full complete refund and when the owner agreed and paid, they actually had the audacity to mark up the fare until the owner showed them their very own printed booking payment, which surprisingly amount to just a few bottles of Singha beer.

I dont see anything viral about missing entry stamp, but sh*t do happens from time to time.

Ive been in and out many times over the last 30 years, and never had that. Once had an issue where presumably the IO didn't notice my long term visa and just gave me a 30 day stamp and I didn't notice till I got home. Quick trip to my local immigration office sorted it.

If you are asking, if an IO officer makes a mistake on the stamp and you don't notice it are you responsible?

Yes it is up to you to make sure

a) the entry stamp is correct

B) you exit the country within the correct time you are allotted. Not the mistake stamp.

In the case of an incorrect stamp you (in most cases) need to return the entry point and have it corrected.

Most immigration offices will not correct someone else's mistake.
