TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the potential new regulations affecting ED visas for individuals over 50 years old. While some commenters suggest alternatives like the Non-O visa or retirement visa, others note that no official announcement has been made by Thai immigration regarding the ED visa restrictions. A personal account mentions a recent denial of a full-year ED visa at Chiang Mai immigration for someone turning 50 soon, indicating that there may be recent changes in practice.

I am at immigration right now and was denied a full 12 month ED visa because my 50th birthday is in 6 months. They will issue me a visa only until my birthday.
If you're over 50 probably better to get a non-O rather than an ED if you wish to study. Haven't heard about it becoming unavailable, certainly hasn't been announced through Thai immigration
You talking to an agent or a visa mill school right? They want to up sell you on a retirement visa. If you you want to just stay here, get a retirement visa, don't use a visa that could get you in trouble. If you want to learn Thai find a more legitimate school.
