TLDR : Answer Summary
At age 50, you can change your visa extension from an Education (ED) extension to a Retirement visa in Thailand. You'll need to cancel your current extension at the immigration office, presenting documentation from your school, and apply for a Retirement extension with proof of maintaining 800,000 baht in your bank account for at least 60 days prior to the application. Ensure you have the updated bank book on the day you apply, along with the necessary letters and documentation.

I have done this process at Chiang Mai a few years ago, so it can be done, but it is possible that they will initially say that you can't change the reason for extension from ED to Retirement (I was told I would have to leave Thailand and get a new visa, which I refused to accept as valid), in which case, just ask to speak to a more senior officer (possibly, it isn't a common procedure, but it is very straightforward in fact). Do make sure that you have a letter from your school confirming that you want to cancel your ED as

has said and then it's a straightforward process.

Why inbox ...everybody learns from a open group and the individual is open then to options to suit his particular visa and extension issues .....

Are you now at a school where you get 90 day extensions of stays based on education for 1900baht at the immigration office?

If so you're not changing ANY visa (because you're not on a visa, you're on an extension) what you are doing is changing the reason for your extension.

You go in to the immigration office and cancel your extension based on education (with documentation from your school) then you immediately apply for a new year extension based on being over 50 (retirement), by submitting the correct documentation, having the 800K baht in your bank account for 60 days before you apply, updating the bank book on the day you apply and having the letter from the bank too.

Thanks. The differences are interesting.

@Ma***
, they are currently here on an ED visa extension and want to change to one based on being over 50.

I think you are confusing a 'retirement visa' gotten inside the country which doesn't require a medical or background with a year long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A long stay visa that you can only get from a thai consulate in the country your passport comes from ;)

No medical certificate or background check? Or is that already part of the ED reason for being here?
