TLDR : Answer Summary
The possibility of obtaining a 30-day visa exemption at the 3 Pagoda Pass is uncertain, as previous experiences indicate that the border may not be open to foreigners. However, the Phu Nam Ron crossing allows for a 30-day visa exemption. Additionally, it's important to note that there is a limit of two visa-exempt entries by land into Thailand in a calendar year.
Everytime I've been to 3 pagodas pass it hasn't been open to foreigners. But you're correct about Phu Nam Ron. Can definitely do a 30 day visa exemption there.
They may be going to a border called phu naam ron, which is closer to Kan, and bangkok. I read a 2006 post that said its a day pass system at 3 pagoda pass in Sangkhlaburi.
it is possible to do that at the border past Kanchanaburi. Keep in mind that there is a limit of TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year though.
