To get a DTV visa in Thailand, was it best to take care of all your credit card debt prior to moving there? Would you take out a loan to consolidate them and cancel the cards after? Trying to fig out the best strategy before leave the US. Currently downsizing home and selling everything before leaving too.
Answer summary
The consensus among commenters is that settling credit card debt is not a formal requirement for obtaining a DTV visa in Thailand, as the embassy primarily checks for sufficient funds (approximately $16,000) in a bank account. Some advice against taking loans to consolidate debt, suggesting instead to focus on managing high-interest debts effectively. Additionally, it is emphasized that you need to maintain your U.S. bank accounts and credit cards prior to relocating.

Your debts have nothing to do with the visa.

Some applicants actually use a loan or line of credit to put the money in the bank.

Most embassies want a minimum of 3 mths.

Contact the embassy you will apply at and ask for what their period is.

You need the equivalent of 500k Thai baht (around 15,400 USD) in a bank account to qualify for the DTV. If you have that much in the bank why would you carry credit card debt? 🤔

Sounds like another case of gofundme in the making 🤔

Apply for the DTV in your home country. If you don’t qualify, just make qualifying a priority. It may take some time. Don’t take out a loan to pay the loan(s) from your credit cards. When I write that out it does seem unwise. Take out a loan to pay a loan. Pay off the credit card with the highest interest first. Don’t close any credit cards, just be more efficient with your finances. Don’t close any bank accounts in your home country, you will need them.

Hope this helps.

With DTV you can’t open Thai bank account, so keep your accounts and credit cards in place.

They only look to make sure you have a job and an equivalent of $16k in your bank account. You can apply in Thailand if you have a VPN. However, it’s best to close out most of your accounts before coming here in my opinion

Chloe Alt a VPN does not help when you have to prove current location, you have to lie on a visa application ;)

The embassy will not care anything about your debt.

They will want to see real money in a real bank for long enough.

That said, yes it’s good to get your debts settled before making a major move.
