Hi all . I'm new to the group. I'm looking for some advice on getting a retirement visa. Is it easier to do in country or from Australia through the Thailand embassy.

Cheers

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is generally easier to apply for a retirement visa from your home country, such as Australia, rather than in Thailand. Applying through the Thai embassy in Australia allows you to present financial documentation from your home bank account, avoiding the challenges of setting up a Thai bank account prior to obtaining your visa. Additionally, it is noted that applying from the comfort of home is more convenient and the processing times can be quick.

Best to do in your home country because it has become almost impossible to open a bank account in Thailand unless you have a long term visa. And to get a retirement visa (or extension of stay based on being over 50 years) you need to show 800,000 Thai Baht in a Thai bank account.

E Visa online ,embassy in Canberra or consulate in Sydney.

I had mine in 8 business days.

Make sure you select the payment tab on the application.

90 day non o visa then do the rest in thailand.

Doing it from your home country is easier since you can show the required money in your home bank account instead of going through the hassle of getting a thai bank account before you have your visa.

Always easier to do it at the embassy. You can do it from the comfort of your your own home applying online. It's all but impossible to do in Thailand now, and visas are meant to be obtained BEFORE travel anyways.
