Is it advisable to follow up on a visa application with the embassy or consulate in Thailand?

I have seen posts by visa applicants who followed up after submission. They were written by applicants whose applications were processed slowly, or by applicants who needed their visas to be issued quickly (for example, when their flights were leaving soon).
I remember seeing posts in which their applications were approved very soon after they followed up (even though I cannot be sure if that was BECAUSE they followed up, or if they would have been approved that day anyway). What I would be interested in is: Has anyone encountered a negative reaction by embassy or consulate staff when following up? I certainly don't want to make the embassy / consulate staff feel annoyed.

Some applicants are too pushy and give the reason for needing the visa quickly as to accommodate their travel schedule. This type of email can backfire because its applicants responsibility to ensure they apply well in advance.
