Hey guys, is it OK to wear shorts when I go to get my drivers license or do they require long pants?
PS: Thank you everyone who has tried to help and offered constructive advice! I appreciate you🙏 I got my two driver licenses today - for a car and for a motorcycle, with no issues.

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, wearing shorts when applying for a driver's license can be a controversial topic. Many community members advise wearing long pants and a collared shirt as a sign of respect at government offices, stating that this choice can lead to better treatment and fewer issues during the process. While some individuals report that wearing knee-length or decent shorts is acceptable in specific areas, there are strict dress codes in some locations, especially in Bangkok where shorts may not be allowed at all. Overall, when in doubt, it is recommended to dress formally to avoid any complications.

I wore shorts when I did mine but nice shorts and a shirt. Just always dress more respectful for anything to do with the government and banks here and you'll be taken more seriously.
A couple of months ago in Rayong-Klaeng they send everyone back wearing shorts, even Thai people. But they had some sarongs to borrow for free 😉 Other question: if you are in doubt already, where is the problem to wear long pants just for that thing? I always do that when i go to officials
When I did mine I wore long trousers and shirt . I made a few mistakes, but the lady passed me .🙏 4 looked and sounded like Algerian guys had shorts and vests all failed 😳
I always wear shorts, shirt and sandals when I leave the house. I have been to Immigration and DLT many times and the service have been excellent. It can of course be different in other places 🤷.
I went last year to Rayong office. I wore a collared shirt and cargo knee length shorts with a belt and joggers with socks. I looked better dressed than some of the Thais there. No problems at all.
Thai people are generally inclined to wear proper, context-appropriate clothing when conducting business with all private agencies and government facilities. This is because it serves as a powerful form of nonverbal communication, respect for others, and social conformity. This is a psychological concept where the clothes we wear influence our own self-perception, confidence, and cognitive performance.
Shorts OK paired with good casual shoes - not runners. I keep a couple of short sleeve collared shirts in the wardrobe for visits to immigration / government offices etc. Walking in with a smile and good attitude also helps.
I’ve been several times for a license. No problem if respectable shorts and not swim type…EDIT… and best to wear button shirt. Tank top/wife beater/vest is not a good impression!
As long as they are hugo boss shorts and north face sliders you will be fine.... they like green, so a chang tank top would be a fine addition to tie it all together
When advising people on conduct in Thai Buddhist temples, a good rule of thumb is this:
If you wouldn't feel comfortable wearing/doing a particular thing at a Church or a Cathedral back home, it probably ain't acceptable to wear/do in a Thai temple.
I always attend wearing smart /chino style shorts and shirt for immigration drivers license etc and never had any problems with those choices. Think as long as you don’t turn up like you’re going to the beach any smart sensible clothing is fine
I done my driving licence in Roi-Et a few months ago and I had shorts on as did 95% of the local people but that's Roi-Et issan others maybe different. On a different subject but with shorts in the subject, when I got married western style my friend came to my wedding from the UK he asked what do I need to wear I said smart casual, I said the Thai men will wear what ever shorts and t-shirts they have, he couldn't believe it when he came and yes the ladies look lovely in the best dresses and the men in their shorts and t-shirts.
Well for my temporary 2 yr then my 5 yr both times I wore shorts and a shirt.Think here if you are a farang going to government building you are half way there if tidy at least. Obviously some I see at Immigration and at the Amphur don't give a Damm .
Graeme Drake the ones that obviously don't care about compliance are usually the last in the queue and I suspect often required to return the following day for something they forgot 😃😃😃
Why is it so hard to show respect for just a few hours? If in any doubt, wear long pants. I do know someone who was not granted a licence because he was wearing short pants (this was 7 years ago)
You need long pants. When I went the first time, after all the paper tests we went outside for the road test. The officer in charge was addressing a group of foreigners but his English was not good. He realized that I could speak Thai so he asked me to translate for him. As I was doing so, he then noticed I was wearing shorts and told me I had to go get pants. There wasnt much time. I had to jump on my motorbike (for which of course I had no license) and quickly buzz through heavy traffic to go and buy a pair and come back before the test was over. The trip to get the pants was far more challenging than the actual road test! 555.
To be fair to him this is a legitimate question. For example in Chonburi immigration wear whatever within reason of course but Bangkok tiesc the new immigration there you cant wear shorts at all. It is a bit of a joke when they have to literally stand up and lean over to see if you have shorts on and then say no please return tomorrow with trousers on but hey ho the joys of living here eh.
It depends, in Rayong klang department they require to put pants. I was coming with shorts but they had spare pants for put on top to cover my legs ;) rules is rules
I know it sounds strange, but they require you to wear a bowtie for the photo... best to just bring your own or you'll be forced to the limited selection they offer.
If you go to any govt offices, wear respectfully. Meaning long pants in your case, although you will not be refused service if in shorts. For banks, knee length shorts is OK but always take off your sunglasses when you enter the bank.
I was advised to wear long trousers, plain T-shirt or polo shirt when I had to go to sort out my bank account. There had to go to government office as part of the procedure.
Always always always... and I'll repeat that. Always wear appropriate clothing when visiting any Thai government office. You will have far less issues. Remember, you are judged on face value whether you agree or not.
