Are people really paying $1k+ for an agent to help them open a bank account and get their retirement visa? Is it really necessary?

I plan to get the non-o from the Los Angeles consulate and then transfer the 800k once i arrive and able to open an account. Reddit is saying that it's almost impossible to do on your own?
Answer summary
The conversation addresses the necessity of hiring an agent to open a bank account and obtain a retirement visa (NON-O) in Thailand. Some participants argue that it is entirely possible to handle the process independently, emphasizing the steps required, such as obtaining a residence certificate and trying different banks. Others support using an agent for convenience, citing that agents may streamline the process. Overall, opinions are divided: while many believe with the right preparation one can manage on their own, others prioritize the peace of mind and efficiency that agents provide.

Some people have trouble with counting up to 10 or with opening a bottle of water. Those are the ones who need to use agents for everything.

Personally I've always done my visa extensions, driving licences and bank accounts entirely on my own. It's all extremely easy. Never needed an agent for anything and probably never will.

If you arrive with a non-O visa then opening a bank account will be simple. Get a Thai phone number first (pre-pay SIM is fine), and a certificate of residence from immigration to show your address. Armed with that any bank should accept you but if they don't just try another bank or branch. Avoid Bangkok Bank.

I have been criticised soo much here by those who swear by the use of an agent while I try to encourage those seeking the Non-O Visa to take the time and make the effort to do it the correct way for a hassle free long term secure Thailand retirement. It is a proccess that is not too difficult. The Agent option is a work around Thailand Immigration rules. It has worked for many and no doubt many more. But be aware it is a skirting around the rules and expect one day the Immigration Department will close the door seeing you on a plane back home with short notice. Take a look at the current Visa tightening efforts by the Govt and also Nominee property ownership. For peace of mind do it the correct way and that avenue is established an available to you.

It may not be necessary, but it sure is convenient.

It is not difficult to do it yourself as long as you arrive with the non-O visa.

It takes me about 30 minutes in hua hin at the bank and 30 minutes at immigration each year to extend. Opening the bank account sometimes requires trying a few banks before you find a helpful one. Absolutely no need to use an agent.

An agent can grease the wheels in some cases and get things done faster. They can work around the rules sometimes which I personally think is a risk if the workaround is scrutinised by govt.

What is really useful is to have a thai native with you. Some things are very straightforward and other things have little details that can be lost in translation.

You can research and find out what documents you need for each part of the process as you are discovering here. But once you are standing in front of a Immi Officer or Bank Teller and they start asking questions and you find out that the English is very limited. They will just say no and send you on your way when there might be a work around or a small Thai conversation to confirm what extra docs you need, when you can come back etc.

I always did on my own …. Once you have a non-o you should be able to open a bank account - may well not be on the first attempt but continue trying …. Kasikorn best bet at the moment.

No need to pay an agent. If you enter on the Non-O visa you should be able to open a bank account and then transfer the funds. You’ll need to get a residence certificate from Immigration to take with you to the bank. It will show the address of your TM-30 registration done by wherever you’re staying. That will be the address that goes on your bank account.

Completely possible to do on your own. You need to be fast though, and ready to get past some possible setbacks.

You get the visa from the Thai embassy. That should be relatively simple.

Once you arrive in Thailand, you have about 30 days to get everything completed to setup your extension. That means you need to get the bank account ASAP. That can involve a few steps like getting a Thai phone number under your own name, getting a residence certificate from immigration, and meeting whatever other requirements the bank may have. Some banks might not require a Residence Certificate, but most will.

The reason it can be complicated is because each immigration office sets their own requirements. Which means there can be 70+ difference sets of requirements for a residence certificate based on where you are located.

Then each bank branch manager can set their own requirements to open an account, so you can have hundreds of different sets of requirements.

Best thing to do is get the Residence Certificate from immigration (you will need a TM30 from where you are staying) and then start going to banks immediately. If one says no, go to the next one, and the next one, and the next one, until you find a bank branch that is willing to work with you. Kasikorn is a popular choice, but they just started requiring a photo ID (with address) from your home country as an additional requirement to open an account, so make sure you have one if you want to open a Kasikorn account. Most people are avoiding Bangkok Bank these days. There are some other options as well.

Once you have the bank account opened, that's most of the complicated stuff done. Transfer your 800,000 baht and then go to your immigration office and ask them for their list of requirements for an extension. Then you can just complete gathering all that information over the next 2 months.
