Has anyone applied for a retirement visa in Thailand while they are already on a tourist visa in Thailand?

I guess the main issue is how to open a thai bank account, which is one of the requirements while I’m here on a tourist visa?

Also, currently with No tax residency in another country - would this be an issue?

Any advice on this helpful !
Answer summary
Applying for a retirement visa (NON-O) in Thailand while on a tourist visa presents challenges, primarily around opening a Thai bank account, which is typically not possible on a tourist visa. Users suggest that one option may include either leaving Thailand to obtain a NON-O visa or using an agent to assist with the process. It's possible to convert a tourist entry to a NON-O retirement visa if you have an income affidavit from your embassy and a rental contract. However, if the affidavit isn't available, you might need to rely on agents for comprehensive services to manage your visa status and bank account setup.

With an agent it is simple, but you must pay for it

It can be done but only using an agent because of the bank account.

What if I come on a tourist visa and just want you to open a bank account for me, with the TM30 and Sim card I will have, can you do this and cost for it? TIA

We only do this in conjunction with obtaining a long term visa.

So for example if you wanted to use our service for retirement, or ED we can assist with the full process on TR (including bank opening).

This can be done in some cases all in only one day depending on your urgency (but costs more).

We do not offer the ability to open a bank on TR without a visa service.

you are not on any visa. You are on your second 1-year extended stay permit. The stay permit is not a retirement visa. That's what the stamp in your passport says

..actually Greg is right, technically you on a year extension, not a visa, so Greg is being spot on in describing what you have, and you like many others, not so precise as Greg call it a visa...but Greg ain't a fool,

OP
Greg this is indeed insightful and interesting thank you . It’s a European passport but I’m no longer resident of that country and I own a business in Asia ( not TH) so I’m unsure if the passport is the guiding factor in this case . Indeed would be better to not have to travel outside given I’m already in Thailand now.

GorgeousJackfruit5815 you use the embassy in Bangkok of the country which' passport you hold, and see if they accept your income documentation and is willing to issue an income affidavit. In case they don't, your option is pay the agent or exit and apply for the Non-O visa outside of Thailand
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
GorgeousJackfruit5815 you have not told us your passport country, so we do not know if your embassy in Bangkok is still issuing income affidavits, or not. As this is IMPORTANT if you want a positive and 100% correct reply

Greg Alexander What about applying from Laos for the non-O. Are they going to accept bank statements from say Canada showing I have 800K in my bank account? Do I have to show 3 months of statements since that is what the Evisa wesbite asks for, and apparently it will be done on there even in Laos?
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
John Erickson yes, the Vientiane embassy accepts a deposit in your Canadian savings account if you prove it is in your sole name. And yes, you have to upload account statements of three months. You would need a .pdf App to create ONE single .pdf document out of several ones

You can definitely get a conversion from a touristic entry, for a fee of 2000 THB, to an initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa on Immigration inside Thailand without the need of 800,000 THB sitting in an already existing Thai bank account.

It is possible if (!) your embassy in Bangkok is still issuing an income affidavit, confirming you make more than monthly 65,000 THB of income.

Using the income affidavit renders superfluous the need having to get a bank account opened, which is not possible on a touristic entry.

You would need a rental contract of a minimum of three months on most Immigration offices.

Then armed with the initial 90-days visa, you could get a Thai bank account opened.

You can apply for the one-year extension of stay before the 90-days out of the initial Non-Imm-O visa expire. You would again need another income affidavit from your embassy. The fee of this application is 1900 THB.

*** However, if your embassy isn't issuing an income affidavit anymore, then only two options are doable:

EITHER

use an agent and buy the "full package" (costs up from 45,000 THB to 80,000 THB) the "full package" meaning the opening of a bank account, initial 90-days Non-O visa and subsequent 12-months extension.

OR

apply for the Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa outside of Thailand, enter, open the bank account ( you can do it all by yourself) transfer your own funds of a minimum of 800,000 THB, and as soon as the deposit has matured in your account for two months, apply for the 1-year extension of the stay permit based on retirement, for a fee of 1900 Baht.

If you want to use an agent, it might be worthwhile to consider where you want to live in Thailand and use the agent there. This may be helpful in the future.

Jesper Ngiam impossible to 'get it done' if you have no bank account & that is the issue, you can't open one alone! Getting a one year extension yes is easy

They would never know if you pay taxes or not and you won’t be able to open a bank account on a TV just apply for the non-o before you come
John **********
John **********
You can't open a bank account on a tourist visa so your only options are to leave to a nearby country to apply for a 90 day Non-O visa, return to Thailand and open the bank account and apply for a 12 month extension of stay or use an agent

@John *********
many banks still refuse opening new bank account for foreigners even if they come with 90 days Non-Imm O visa, reason was always they need a one year visa to open an account, but immigration needs a proof of 3 months seasoned money in local bank
Graham ******
Graham ******
Johan_Budiotso the reason is they don't want to do business with you so try another branch
John **********
John **********
Johan_Budiotso if one bank branch won't do it just move onto the next one. But make sure you first have a residence certificate from immigration and a Thai SIM registered against your passport, otherwise your not going to get anywhere
