Is applying for the DTV visa a better option than visiting Thailand on a 60-day visa exemption?

Quick question - been preparing for DTV APPLICATION through research and having completed 7 trips to Thailand since 2021. In your educated opinions, instead of me visiting once or twice per year on (now 60 day visa free entry) to spend time in The Kingdom and with my Thai GF of 4 years, does anyone agree that getting the DTV would make more sense for me? I am fully qualified with more than 5 years of online work easily proven (i am a copywriter) and the necessary funds as well. Thanks in advance for some sensible advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question considers whether applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) is more beneficial than making short visits to Thailand under the 60-day visa exemption. The author expresses they have been visiting Thailand frequently and are in a long-term relationship with a Thai girlfriend. Responses suggest that obtaining a DTV could offer better stability and flexibility for prolonged stays, enabling the author to stay for extended periods and visit more often without the restrictions of short visa entries.

Pretty simple. If you want to stay in Thailand with your GF long term, you need a visa.

I understand

but what if I want to return again the same year only a couple months later and visit more often each of the 5 years? This is what I am thinking. The freedom to come and go more freely, leading up to even staying 4 or 5 months before the visa expires! That is why I am here asking…

Thank you

I get that .. but I want continue visiting whenever I want to .. I still cannot stay too long each time .. but have been increasing the length of each stay. Next trip will stay about 10 weeks .. with the DTV I do believe this will be easier

10 weeks is only 70 days. You get 60 days free and you can extend. If you are only going to stay short times, not sure what a DTV would get you?

I would get the DTV reading between the lines of many recent posts (even though not official that we know) they seem to be limiting/questioning people who have more than 90 days per year in the Kingdom on visa exempt.

yes — I like the sound of your answer and think this is what I need too.

You sound like a targeted visa applicant. I wouldn't be saying that your purpose is to come and visit your girlfriend. Go ahead and apply. Be prepared to show your income and tax returns, and possibly a business if you set yourself up.

“targeted visa applicant”… haven’t heard that one yet. My Passport has a total of 7 entries in 4 years .. my next move is to apply for a DTV. I am a Digital Nomad if there ever was one. My purpose is to stay in Thailand longer periods of time and continue working and spending baht. Saying I am coming to be with my GF would be foolish — thanks for the info I think.

this visa is aimed towards visitors like you.

It will be a much safer option this these days.

can you elaborate further? I never thought of it as “safer”.. but if you mean how the Thai government keeps flip flopping on everything … I agree. I did enjoy the 60 days in March and April this year

many people who have had one or more entries already into Thailand this year, have been giving a much harder time at immigration, for exempt entries.

And a few with very different circumstances and lengths of time in Thailand long-term and in the last couple of years, have actually been held, questioned and then sent back to their passport country.

been only once this year … probably won’t return until January 2026… I should add … I can speak more Thai than the average visitor too and continue daily studying

If you have a look at some of the other Thai visa groups you will find a lot more stories like this. Sadly no rhyme nor reason publicised about this.

You have your ducks in a row so I would suggest applying now for the DTV before there's changes.

that is what I am going to do … just get it and use it as needed … even if it is much less than most people would use it

ok .. thanks for the info … I am not too worried about this and have heard a few similar stories … based on written words alone it would be hard to determine why this happened to this ONE guy … who knows …maybe he looked suspicious. Everyone is different… I will be back in a couple hundred days. My passport is full of empty pages

You have the right idea mate.
