Come with two copies, they look at you funny and say why did you bring two. One is enough.

If you come with one copy, they look at you and say go downstairs and make one more copy

I have retirement visa although I'm married The marriage visa was just too much work

Marriage visa should be straight forward, should be automatically permanent residency and a Thai citizen should be responsible for foreign spouse, not another way around !!

It seems the biggest difference between a marriage extension and a retirement extension is the size of the paperwork pile.

Seriously, guys, we’re retired. It’s not as though we have to squeeze immigration in between the morning commute, a staff meeting and the school run. We have all year to gather a few documents, photocopy everything six times, arrange it in the correct order and prepare ourselves mentally for the inevitable request for one more piece of paper.

Get your ducks in a row, pack a snack, and enjoy the annual immigration adventure.

I was asked for two copies at Ubon. They turned me down at the regional office because I didn’t have a letter from my embassy because the embassy stopped that five years ago.

I had to go to Savannakhet and they didn’t want anything except money and my payment slip.

Ubon said they only need one copy when I renew my 90 day and get one year.

I’ve been on Non-O visas for over a decade.

Ask the office you will apply at, and be prepared for them to change the rules when you apply.

Apparently two copies of documents for a marriage extension varies by office. I never had to provide 2 copies.

That right, in 5 extensions applied for only once have needed 2 copies. And my last application I took 2 to be sure and they gave 1 back and I can use it next year.

My immigration office is Nong bua Lamphu and the officers are so helpful and plescent

Immigration official s prefer you to bring your wife so they can talk to her instead of you.

My advise to friends I've helped with Immigration officials is leave her at home as it can complicate the issues.

A spouse visa is very little more work for us, but a lot more work for immigration. Those that qualify for both should use a spouse visa to protect government jobs.

I've just recently done my yearly extension for marriage, and took 2 copies of all and the officer gave one copy back and told us we don't need 2 use this returned copy for next year.

I disagree with you.

Whilst there's more paperwork involved, 'complicated' is certainly not a word I'd use; you maintain a list of documents required and just collate them together along with four photos.

I'm on no. 20 this year and rarely has the time sitting in front of the immigration officer exceeded twenty minutes. (Jomtien)
Don *******
Don *******
Harry Martin I think that Jomtien is particularly easy compared to some other places. I personally have never spent even five minutes with the officer, once it was my turn.

Not sure if it makes any difference that I own my own condo and have a specific bank account just for the 800kB.
Paul *******
Paul *******
Harry Martin I had the, photocopy not clear enough which was bs. Required the home owner attend though they live is Europe. Agent had power of attorney but would not accept it. Then under consideration for 1 month so i lost work.

Yeah it's a pain.

Yeah, I have to admit that they are a touch idiosyncratic when it comes to documents. Last time they refused a bank document as it was askew a couple of degrees.

I'm lucky, I guess, that I own my own house, so I don't need any landlord's contribution....
Dave *********
Dave *********
Harry Martin happy for you. We took four trips to Jomtien last time as requirements changed every time we sat before a different officer. Of all the things they each said we were “missing”, not a single one was listed on their requirements sheet. It’s a crapshoot.
Trevor *******
Trevor *******
Out of interest, what things were missing?
Dave *********
Dave *********
Trevor Moore nothing missing as per their list. A couple of the things added were (for the first return trip) a copy of the tabien baan for the house our landlords live in (we didn’t bother to tell the IO that they spend time in three different residences around the country), and when we returned with that the same IO sent us away again to return with proof that the landlords paid their property taxes on that property. They are both Thai nationals and have only ever lived in Thailand. I can’t remember the other two things she made up, I’d stopped listening by then and was just following my wife. Eventually we forced a conversation with the younger, nicer women off to the side who technically outranked the c*** that we were dealing with and she accepted our stack of extra documents without even looking at them. Why I laugh at all these “You must be doing something wrong, it was simple for me” comments. And yes, we were pleasant the entire time, btw. Not once pushed back or rolled our eyes. “Kop” and “ka” in every sentence (my wife is Thai).

Thing is, every item on a list is real estate for these people to inject their nonsense. So the OP’s logic that a shorter list of requirements might make their life easier is absolutely sound.

Make sure you bring your Thai spouse with you for your extension. When switching from marriage to a different type, your spouse has to attend.
Andy *********
Andy *********
@Brandon ***********
that can’t be right. What if the reason for changing is because the Thai spouse died?
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Andy ********
then you show proof of that obviously
Andy *********
Andy *********
@Brandon ***********
yes of course. There may also be other reasons why it is impractical to bring the Thai spouse to immigration to change visa. So basically I think you are wrong in saying the spouse has to attend.

Did you completely start over with a new non-O visa, or did you apply for a 1-year extension based on retirement after the previous 1-year extension was based on marriage? Standard requirement is that the spouse must attend if switching directly from one to the other.

I did it alone, no spouse at Jomtien. From 5 years marriage extensin then next renewal was retirement.

The TM7 and 8 need copies of your passport details etc . One photograph on each form . Then a letter from your bank confirming B800k plus photo copy your bank book for the last year. This must be updated the day you visit immigration. The bank letter is valid for 7 days .
