How long should I give myself in Vietnam to secure a DTV and return to Thailand?
I’m planning to book return flights from Thailand to Vietnam (Hanoi) and apply for my DTV from there. I need the return ticket, so do I give myself 2 weeks? 3? If I return before the DTV is issued then I guess my DTV application gets cancelled so I’m nervous. But I’d rather not spend a whole month in Vietnam just for DTV

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a DTV visa in Vietnam before returning to Thailand, it's advisable to allow at least 2 to 3 weeks to process your application. Experiences shared by others indicate that the process can take anywhere from 14 days to a month, with some suggesting having a flexible return ticket or postponing any flight until the visa is issued. Additionally, while it's not common for embassies to automatically cancel the application if you leave the jurisdiction, it may complicate matters if an interview is necessary. Booking a one-way ticket or a flexible return ticket is often recommended to avoid issues.
Ideally, give yourself enough time. But if you return to Thailand before your DTV is issued, it will NOT aotomatically get cancelled. It is very likely any embassy would not even be aware that you meanwile traveled out of their juristiction / or even back to Thailand for that matter. Only problem that could arise, is if they decide that you are a case to be invited for an in-person interview. That is why many embassies ADVISE to remain in their country of justistiction until the visa is finally issued. Only embassy I know of that speaks of cancellation in that case is London - and I still think they have it wrong.
At least 2 weeks, but your application might get denied also since so many are denied in Vietnam lately. So also take in consideration returning to Thailand without visa
Vietnam is a nice place to visit, and not just to get your dtv. Your new telak won't run off with someone else while you are gone so don't stress it. In fact there is nothing wrong with taking her with.
To be safe, buy your ticket out of Vietnam after your visa is approved. You do need to put a flight date in the application but you can just put in a scheduled flight into Thailand, with any airline, say 3 weeks after you file your application. The visa process time varies widely from person to person, and depends if the Embassy requires further information from you or not. And be prepared for the Embassy to check you are still in Vietnam, several days into your application process. Most likely they will ask you to send pictures of every page in your passport, including all the blank pages. This way they can be certain you are still in Vietnam
GentlePhoenix7380 in a pinch you can use onward ticket website and book a real flight that is cancelled for you automatically for like $17 USD. I’ve used it so many times and it always works. I’ve bought a flight standing at immigration counter before because they asked for it. It took less than 5 mins
GentlePhoenix7380 No, the Embassy will not ask you proof of onward flight. You will need to fill in a flight number, date and time as part of your application, which you can find online from any airline, but not book the flight. I suggest you pick a flight approximately 3 weeks from your application submitted date.
I have never been asked by Vietnam immigration when entering Vietnam for proof of onwards flight either.
Been in Hanoi. Visa was approved in 5 weekdays. I booked beforehand for a week and stated in the docs to the embassy I will stay till visa is issued and would postpone the flight if neccessary.
When you apply for the Vietnam visa give yourself extra time (you don't need proof of flights for visa application).
I'd allow atleast 2 weeks, and ideally book a flexible flight incase you need to stay (or be willing to wear the cost).
You need to stay there until you recieve the DTV, there are a handful of cases where people did reenter Thailand and still get their DTV but if the embassy realises you will be rejected/denied.
GentlePhoenix7380 when you apply for the Vietnam visa, say that you plan to be in Vietnam for a month - if you give your actual planned travel dates (perhaps 2 weeks) and you need to stay longer you would need to do a visa run out of Vietnam and reenter. Sorry I wasn't clear I meant for the Vietnam e-visa.
GentlePhoenix7380 I don't know what passport you hold but I ve been to Vietnam hundred times, never been asked to show my return ticket. So you should be fine
