TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand with a TM6, which is the arrival card required for non-Thais, travelers may be asked to show proof of funds. While it's not a requirement for everyone, if requested, you should have at least 20,000 Baht in cash or its equivalent. This applies to any entry into Thailand, regardless of whether it is on a tourist or work visa.

Just trying to understand, is it every time we fly into Thailand on a tourist visa or even a work visa, we must be able to show 20,000 Baht cash on us? So if I fly out to Laos and fly back into Thailand, I must have 20,000 on me?

not domestic. It’s only when going through immigration that you MAY be asked. Very very rare that someone on a longer term visa would be asked. In theory it’s possible but highly unlikely.

Okay, good to know. So domestic or international flights, both? Do you usually follow this and carry that much cash on you?

that’s the law. Rarely enforced. Usually only those with a history of “dubious” entries will be asked, but it’s at the discretion of the immigration officer you stand in front of on the day.

A TM6 is the arrival card everyone other than Thais have to fill in. I’m guessing you might be referring to a visa exemption entry. Doesn’t matter the type of visa anyone could be asked to show proof of funds but most aren’t. If asked it’s 20,000 baht or equivalent in CASH only.

Thanks! Don't really need it. But it would've been good info before that night in Bangkok where I discovered there was a limit 😅

phone your bank and explain you need to increase your limit and they will do this while you’re on the phone

I rang mine 3 weeks ago and now have a £500 limit instead of £200

Even if there was an ATM airside, it wouldn't help a lot of people. My visa, for example, has a daily max. I'd only be able to withdraw a bit less than 10k. Then I could of course just sit and wait for 24 hours :)

3 day wasn’t a big issue but the said if I don’t pay then leave the airport and buy a new ticket

Then there is no problem wtf it’s crazy

Nathan Aiyna Sassen ATMs are only in the domestic terminal for arrivals. None before immigration for international arrivals so you can't withdraw cash to show to immigration if required. And when you depart from Thailand, once you pass immigration, in the international departures terminal, the ATMs will only dispense foreign currency. They don't dispense baht since they don't want you taking too much baht out of Thailand.

Immigration will only except cash nomatter what the embassy or consulate says

you got away lightly. Some major horror stories around from people who’ve been stopped whilst on overstay at a police checkpoint inside Thailand. Fines, imprisonment and deportation. To name a few.

I’ve never heard of anyone being charged 1000 per day. The law states 500 per day up to a max of 20,000. However after a certain number of days you face being blacklisted for X number of years.

@Stuart ********
this is the biggest problem

The two have different pages they read from

Ffs the embassy website says 300 baht per day over stay

Last year I got charged 1000 baht per day by immigration police as I left Thailand and they wouldn’t even accept the simple mistake

Two different government departments who obviously don’t speak together much. One is the ministry of foreign affairs that oversea the Thai consulates around the world the other is the Royal Thai Police forces immigration branch. One can say what they assume is the case whereas the other insists it’s not. It’s the immigration officer who decides whether they are going to ask you and ultimately if you’re allowed into the country. Embassies/consulates sell the visas.

well from hundreds of reports online that state that when they’ve been asked it’s only cash. There are no ATMs at any of Thailand’s airports before immigration. It’s a logistics thing. The bank employees who would fill them up don’t have airport security clearance so wouldn’t be able to get to them. Other side of immigration and you’ll find them everywhere.

@Pui ****
this is interesting since the embassy U.K. said it’s fine to show digital currency

@Stuart ********
walking up the concourse to BKK immigration I’m sure I’ve seen ATM

but an email from thai embassy said showing digital currency was fine

Nathan Aiyna Sassen as above. Cash only. No phone app, bank statements, etc. also there are no ATMs airside of immigration so you have to bring it with you. Any major currency will suffice as long as it’s equivalent to 20k baht. Very few are asked and generally those who have a history of back to back visa exemption or tourist entries.

@Nathan **************
that's completely wrong as many have posted hundreds of times. It must be cash only. Not bank statements, credit cards, etc. People who try that keep reporting immigration rejects anything other than cash but the cash can be any major currency equivalent to
*****
baht.

@Stuart ********
you can also show your bank funds on your phone I believe

I’ve never had any issue providing my personal finances but that’s not to say they will ask you
