Tomorrow I get to Suwanahphum airport for a repat flight to Oz. I have a non O stay permit in my passport. I'll need to get a re-entry stamp at immigration at the airport.

Can anyone tell me: is this stamp issued as you pass through the gate in the normal process, ie just ask for it right there, or is it stamped at a separate immigration counter prior to, or after, the normal gate?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a re-entry stamp at Suvarnabhumi Airport, you must visit a separate counter before the normal immigration checkpoint. The cost for a single re-entry permit is approximately 1,200 THB, and it is available 24/7, although the counter may not always be staffed. If it's unmanned, inform the security personnel, who can help you get someone to assist you. It's important to know that due to the current COVID-19 situation, there may be delays or changes in service availability.

At Suvarnabhumi they ONLY sell re-entry permits in International Departure 2, they sell the
****
but due to this covid shit show they might not man the desk the whole time so you need to tell people at security screening that you want one and they'll get someone to come to the desk

the cost is 1200 for a single and 3800 for a multiple, (you don't need a photo or a form or any copies)

Just to complete the picture, I came to BKK Thursday from Korat, visited Dr Donna in the arvo, made an appointment for 8am Friday. Did that and by 7pm Friday had my PCR test result (negative fortunately). Saturday morning had the document printed at a photoshop and bobsyeruncle. All set for the flight today. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Since no one has mentioned it yet, the service is available
****
but the counter is not always manned due to the low demand. You may need to ask for them to find someone to do it for you.
