Hi all I'm a bit confused at how I open a Thai bank account before applying for my retirement visa? Have I read that wrong? Do you go over on holiday and open one but I read somewhere you can't open it unless you have a visa?
Also is it advisable to use an agency to do everything for you?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account for a retirement visa, it's generally required to have a long-term visa, such as a Non-O. Individuals are advised to acquire a Non-O visa before arriving in Thailand, as it simplifies the account-opening process. They also need a local residence lease and may benefit from using an agency to assist with the process, as opening a bank account can be challenging without proper paperwork and understanding of current regulations. Key steps include acquiring the Non-O visa, securing a residency certificate, and ensuring the account has the requisite funds (800,000 THB) seasoned for at least two months before applying for the one-year extension.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
To obtain a 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa in your home country, apply for it in the E-Visa online system of the Thai embassy in your home country.
***For the application to the 90-days Non-Imm-O visa, you can upload proof of a minimum of equivalent of 800,000 THB in your HOME bank account!
*** Enter Thailand on the 90-days Non-O Visa. Get TM30 registered at your accommodation, visit Immigration, get a “certificate of residence” from them.
Get a Thai mobile number.
Visit a bank branch and get the bank account opened
*** if the bank staff is too stupid to know how to do it, or if they are inventing rules they pull out of their noses so they do not need to service you
GET AN AGENT to get your bank account opened. The service fee should be something around 5000.- THB
*** Once the Thai bank account is opened, transfer from abroad a minimum of 800,000 THB onto it
***Wait until the 800,000 have seasoned for 2 months, get the bank letter that confirms it and visit Immigration. Apply for the
“1-year Extension of Temporary Stay Permit based on Retirement”
(which some people refer to as “retirement visa” . . but which is NOT a visa but just an extended stay permit)
for the application to the visa in ypur home country, you can upload .pdf documents showing your bank abook standings of the recent 3 months. . . . . However, for the application to the "extension" on Immigration inside Thailand, Immigration only accepts a written, signed and stamped bank letter statement on a paper document showing the bank's official letterhead

No agents needed if you follow the recommended route....firstly apply for a nonO visa(>50) in your home country....fly to thailand and get a permanent place to stay(lease agreement) ....now u can try to open a bank acct with nonO and lease agreement (kbank/SCB) try as many branch as possible......if still fails go to immigration office and get a residency certificate and a letter from immigration stating u need a bank acct for your extensions.....good luck you will definitely get a bank acct if u try hard enough Or u might be lucky and get it on first try....Cheers
what a useless waste of time . . . . . you forget to mention that the 30-day clock for opening a bank account in Thailand and transfer 800,000 THB onto it, starts on the day of entry . . so suggesting to "try hard and try even harder" might result in total waste of time. Visit bank branches as soon as having obtained the certificate of residency from Immigration (which already is a loss of days), and if you don't succeed on the banks, don't try much longer, get an agent to get your bank account opened in 2 days, transfer the 800K ASAP because the money needs to have seasoned for 2 months on the day you apply to the 1-year Extension of Stay Permit based on retirement
your advices and comments are terrible, since you started to comment in this group. I have yet to read ONE post from you that makes any sense. You should take a long holiday from the group. There are plenty of barstool experts in Soi 6 who would be happy with your company
you can, however I don't like it. Because as myself being an admin to (another) visa advice group, I encourage to keep the topic public and open in the group itself, so everybody can learn
Highly recommend getting your Non-O before you leave it creates a somewhat easier pathway to getting a bank account

I was lucky enough to get mine on a long-term IE 14-month education visa. I got rejected by several Banks before one accepted me. that was over a year ago. now at the current climate I think it's next to impossible to do it.
I'm glad that you were able to get it Jasper. But for many that is not possible. It really does depend on the branch that you go to and the mood at the time. I do hope that your funds are not frozen while they try to figure out whether you are a scammer or not. I know many people have had that happen. but for most people who come here who want a bank account it is next to impossible at the present climate. good luck okay to you sir.
yes sure Sir, because you need a driver's license to drive your car to the bank branch. This is very useful information. The bank staff that served you must be some of the most clever people in Thailand 😂 . .Don't even try tell us you didn't have to show your passport. You may tell this to your grandmother. I love these fairy tales from the barstool experts like you
the nonO is already in the passport and thai driving licence is a gov issued document that have your address in it and the bank staff recognizes that....so whats your problem?
my Thai driving license shows my old address and an expired passport number. The bank staff wouldn't know. It is some cure for really stupid people. A Thai driving license does not replace a person's ID or a passport. If a bank staff was willing to accept it, you were lucky to meet such a stupid bank employee

At some point you will need to establish a lease agreement and certificate of residency, From my resent experience the banks will want to see that as well a cell phone in your name only, I recommend using an agent unless you have a lot of free time on your hands.

It's worth considering that this endless official tinkering and flip-flopping over visa and banking policy is the universe suggesting that there may be better places to begin your SE Asia retirement saga.
Thailand seems to have lost the plot. Hopefully only temporarily. But who knows?
Flip flop policy of visa or banking or any law etc.. is already everywhere. But Thailand and other South East Asian countries have more of this. Where you go in South Asian countries, you can find easy flip flop.
Yes. What I meant is also that. Thailand is not only one which has flip flop policy. Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar ( is in war ) Indonesia, Vietnam, philiiphines, Singapore * yes or but differently flip flop, I do not mention other countries, but most of them have flip flop. In my experience, Yes Thailand has it for sure.
I pay a lot of attention to the speed and trajectory of change. Sure, Phnom Penh has some dumpy areas, and a dumpy past. But the pace of change is rapid, and that's fun to be around. As opposed to some places that are stagnant or declining.
Kampot is great, but a little too touristy for me. Ditto Siem Reap. And I do appreciate the amenities and infrastructure of a capital city on the way up.
For me, I appreciate frontier experience during economic boom.
Edit: I just spent a week exploring PP. Heading back tomorrow. Am very familiar with Siam Reap and Battambang. Kampot is high on my must-see list once I am settled in with retirement visa, condo and bank.

1)Use yr bank account to open non o 90 days in yr country.
2)When in thailand ,open yr acct with 800k baht in the bank.
Once money season in bank go extent 1 yr non o retirment.
If you want a more relax retirement when you are here, get a agent to help.

use an agent to streamline the process unless you plan on coming in and out of Thailand for 90 days.
And then have your account frozen like thousands of other "agency accounts"

It’s almost impossible these days to open a bank account by yourself without a long term visa. You may find an agent that can help you but even some of them are saying no chance.
Get a Non O before you come and during the first 30 days open the account and transfer 800k. Then when the money has been in for two calendar months apply for the year extension.
