TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is looking to change their visa extension from an education basis (Master's program) to a work-related reason. They inquire whether others have gone through this process and seek advice on whether to apply for a work permit before or after obtaining the new extension. Commenters provide insights, indicating that if the user is on an 'Education Plus' extension, they can change to employment without leaving Thailand. However, if on a standard education extension, they will need to exit the country to obtain a Non-B visa and suggest consulting with the university, employer, and immigration office for specific procedural details.
On the other hand, if you are on an extension for studying (just ED, NOT ED-plus), you need to leave Thailand once to enter on Non-B or as a tourist to proceed. Check your current stamp, and talk with your uni and new employer
IF you are on the Education Plus extension (which is given to people after they complete their degree program to give them a year in country to look for work) you are supposed to be able to change to employment inside the country without leaving to get a Non-B at a thai consulate
You'd have to talk to your university, your new employer and your immigration office where you have the extension issued to see how the process actually works.
