TLDR : Answer Summary
A U.S. citizen in Nakhon Si Thammarat with an expired visa can extend their 30-day stamp by visiting the local Thai Immigration office. The extension typically costs 1900 Thai baht. It's important to clarify the status of the visa to avoid complications with overstaying.

I believe that the OP has the answers needed for his question. We wish him success in obtaining the 30 day extension of stay at his local Thai Immigration office.
AND while he is there ask the the Thai Immigration Officer for the list of requirements for a New Non O Visa, if that's your plan.

you go to the immigration office at Nakhon Si Thammarat <- the province you say you're staying in..
sure hope you mean you have a visa that is expiring SOON, not an "expired visa" <- which means you are on overstay..
