Hi dear experts, Does anyone have a reliable source that the Thai customs authorities have reduced the limit for importing cash without declaration from $20,000 to only $15,000? Google (AI) still says both is correct but there were some screenshots here a few days ago where it stated only the limit of 15‘000 🤷🏻‍♀️

TLDR : Answer Summary
The current limit for importing cash into Thailand without declaration is USD $15,000, effective since February 24, 2017. This limit has been confirmed by numerous commenters referencing official sources, including the Thai Customs Department and the Royal Gazette. There is some confusion regarding older information that mentions a limit of $20,000, but this is no longer accurate. It is advisable to refer to the most recent infographics and official communications from Thai authorities for the most reliable information.

what is your problem? There were TWO proofs that the limit is 15,000 USD equivalent. The first proof came from somebody who had spoken with a Customs officer on his arrival at the airport, and this officer confirmed the limit is 15,000 USD. The second proof is the Thai Customs official poster which I posted several times. Anything contrary to this you find on Google or ChatGPT you can kick into the bin

Nongnuch Kamdee Well my problem wasn‘t with the customs but with google and a lot of different travel websites which differ. Its really a shame that google and even Thai Embassy pages and all those travel information pages were not able to update in these 6 or more years. Here in this group there were also a lot of members quoting different limits as almost everyone relies on google etc. Thats why I started a new post, which I beleived will be helpful for others here too. Well now I realised that was wishful or naive thinking. What I don‘t understand is why there are people here accusing me of illegal activity or just beeing rude. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks for your „kind“ reminder.

Jinjin Cornis this is what the Thai Embassy quotes on their page so how could I know that its obviously wrong? Most travelers should be able to trust the information provided by such a website don‘t you think so?

Graham Seal Well those false limit information come from the different Thai Embassy websites like this one. How can it be that those sites are not able to update or correct such an important customs related information which is not new as a learned now, but was updated 6 years ago?

Graham Seal exactly - do NOT rely on Google or ChatGPT. They still give you wrong information. Rely only on the official infographic of the Thai Customs Department, which is the most recent one from January 20, 2020

There are many sources for a 500,000 baht limit (in total value) for currency imports. I checked 3 embassy websites, they say the same.

Also, almost every country has police powers that enable cash or other valuables to be seized if they reasonably suspect involvement in criminal activity. This obviously concerns exporting from your country of origin (and transit airports) but I assume Thai police have similar powers. I regularly see police checks in airports in various countries for this and other potential issues. Declaration helps demonstrate innocent purposes.

Robert Gillespie this Thai Embassy Bern text is OUTDATED. The limit from when on the import has to be declared is 15,000 US Dollar equivalent, it is not 20,000 USD equivalent any more

0 baht is 15,735 at spot price today. I think the point is it’s 500,000 baht and its equivalence is whatever currency(s) when you enter. So I think the information is upto date- it also same on UK, and Australian embassy sites.

Also, it does not change the AML problems carrying significant cash can cause- especially if not declared (even when technically it does not have to be).

Now, if it is Thai Baht currency or Thai Baht Thai Baht negotiable instruments, then if it is ฿50,000.– (50k) Thai Baht Currency or Thai Baht negotiable instruments (if Departing Thailand by Airports), or ฿2,000,000.– (2 million) Thai Baht Currency or Thai Baht negotiable instruments (if Departing Thailand by land), then

a traveler actually needs Authorization and Permission Beforehand from the Thai central bank, BoT (Bank of Thailand), in order to exit Thailand with those amounts of Thai Baht, not only just merely to Declare to the Thai Customs Department Officers

The threshold to declare Foreign Currency to the Thailand Customs Department has been USD $15,000.– Dollars effective since 24 February 2017:

as published in Thailand's Royal Gazette on 23 February 2017 of the Thailand Finance Ministry Notice dated 08 February 2017

Also, the Thailand Customs Department has had an infographic chart Posted on Facebook since 16 July 2019

Nongnuch Kamdee the OP was asking when it was first implemented and I replied that it was published in the Royal Gazette since February 2017

Also, it is good there is an English language infographic that is dated January 2020

Therefore between February 2017 to January 2020, there have been no changes and also between January 2020 to March 2026 there also have been no changes

Travelers from and to Thailand who have foreign currencies with an amount exceeds USD 20,000 (or equivalent) must inform the Customs Department according to the Ministerial Regulation No. (25) of 1987 issued under Exchange Control Act.

Note: If you’re departing the United States, U.S. law requires declaring more than $10,000 leaving the U.S., even though Thailand’s threshold is $20,000.
