Do you need to show an onward flight when arriving in Thailand with a 6-month METV from the UK, and can you obtain a residency certificate in Chiang Mai with a one-month rental contract?

6 month METV from the UK.

Do you need to show an onward flight at Suvarnabhumi?

Can you get a residency certificate in Chiang Mai with a one month rental contract?

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
When arriving in Thailand on a 6-month Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) from the UK, you may be required to show proof of onward travel, typically at your departure point, such as at Heathrow Airport instead of Suvarnabhumi. Additionally, to obtain a residency certificate in Chiang Mai, a one-month rental contract alone is insufficient; you must register your address at the Immigration Office, which can vary by location and may take time.

Highly unlikely when you arrive at BKK. You're more likely to be asked to show proof of return/onward travel within 60 days when you check in for your flight, especially at LHR

Laurita Del Valle I always use Phnom Pehn but I think Myanmar is fine, it's onward travel

Laurita Del Valle As mentioned above - your problem will llikely manifest at the boarding the plane. But the immigration officer could ask for onward travel. If I were in your situation - I would by a bus ticket leaving Bangkok before leaving for Thailand.. Likely you will not need it - but better to have and not need. then to need and not have.

I think its the Airline's policy, as such they can do what the want. In the US I was told by one airline - the one-way ticket was going to require a visa, or other onward travel. But I don't remember them actually asking for it. I use a bus ticket for proof of onward travel.. Can be purchased online for $20/USD - if you feel the need

I wouldnt bank on it out of LHR. They know you can be refused entry without proof of a return/onward travel within the validity of your entry stamp, ie 60 days for a tourist visa. LHR are notorious for the correct documentation

I was under the impression the airline only asks for this if you have a one way ticket without a visa on a visa exemption and not if you have a six or 3 month tourist visa.

Three questions can be asked on arrival in Thailand. Proof of funds, 20.000 Thb or equivalent currency in CASH, proof of accommodation and proof of onward travel. You can not get a residency certifcate with just a rental contract. First of all your address needs to be registerd at the Immigration Office, depending on location it could than be possible or not or take long time.

At LHR it's an airport policy not the airline.

thank you that is good because I can rent somewhere for a month and get my Thai license still. I don't currently have a license in the UK and will be learning with the Honda safety school in Chiang Mai. Am I correct it is the airline that checks for visa exemptions and not usually for 90 day or 180 day visas for an onward ticket?.

You can drive with your national and international driving license on Thai roads. People who stay longer inside Thailand than 90 days need a Thai driving license. But yes, you do not need a long term contract for the Certificate of Residence.

so you don't need to show rental contract?. Im trying to know If I can just rent for a month or need to rent for six months. I want to get a Thai driving license as soon as possible to be legal on Thai roads.

In Chang Mai your landlord, house owner or house master need to register your address within 24 hours of arrival with the TM 30 form, copy your passport, signed. Copy id landlord and housebook landlord both signed. After that you can visit Immigration and get a Certificate of residence with your passport, notification of stay (small paper that your addres is registerd).

you need to take your rental contract to get a residency certificate what I want to know is will a one month duration be ok

As stated you need to register your address first to get a Certificate of Residence. Without an address how you think Immigration can give you a certificate that you live somewhere.
