I am hoping to retire next year to Thailand, money is no problem for either the bank deposit or monthly income, my only complication is I will be bringing my dog, so I have to make sure everything is right for that. But it unsettles me when I read about visa applications and renewals being rejected! It worries me that it could be rejected and I have to return to the UK without having time to get my dog back too. Can anybody reassure me?

For info, retired UK police officer
Answer summary
The process of relocating to Thailand for retirement while bringing a dog can be concerning, especially regarding visa applications. Most responses indicate that as long as you meet the financial requirements and have the correct paperwork, your visa application should be straightforward. It's suggested to prepare well by understanding visa rules and possibly using an agent for pet relocation to ease the process. Concerns about visa rejections are common, but many expats with similar situations report positive experiences, emphasizing adherence to regulations and timely arrangements for both finances and pet importation.

Get a reputable company to ship your dog.

YOU MUST TRAIN YOUR DOG FOR MONTHS BEFORE HE GETS ON THE PLANE.

We trained our dachshund to,sleep,in the very crate he was was shipped in for months so he got to know it as home. Also took him for trips in the crate in the car. This meant when he was crated for 12 hours in the cargo hold he was not stressed at all.

Some people make extending your non-O visa sound like a really difficult task, but it's really simple. It takes me between 30 to 55 minutes each year at immigration, plus however long I have to queue at the bank to get their documents.

Here's the process:

1. Enter Thailand using your 90 day non-O visa.

2. Get a Thai sim card linked to your passport and a residence certificate from immigration (also get their list of requirements to extend and the application form) ASAP.

3. Open a Thai bank account within 2 weeks of arrival using the above and take extra id like uk drivers licence.

4. Deposit 801,000 baht into your account as soon as you have opened it.

5. Wait until your money has seasoned for 2 months, then get all your documents together on the list from immigration and apply to extend.

Good luck.

I've lived here 5 years with wife visas are a bit of a mouthful sometimes, but do as immigration says, try to stay within the law and all is ok.

So long as you have all the relevant paperwork and vet stuff sorted for your dog, then it should not be an issue , and don't be surprised being an ex copper that they don't try and sign you up for the Thai Tourist Police

Dont use the 800,000 baht deposit because you are screwing yourself out of the interest which is 4-5%,enter on your monthly income if it meets requirements….

Why leave your money locked away gaining you nothing and only gaining money for the bank….

4-5 % interest elsewhere,.01% in Thailand…

As long as you stay,or stay there till you die there…

Make sure its in your will,or the bank keeps it…
Stuart ***********

John Bilous he can't do that for the first year extension as his Embassy (UK) will not provide the income affidavit.

For your info, being a retired po has absolutely no bearing on getting a visa for Thailand. There are several companies that operate here that can help you with assistance with everything you need to bring yer fur baby over. Best wishes 🙏

You are not gonna get denied for retirement visa and extrension. It's straight-forward and no issue possible contrary to DTV.

Yes, the stories you read sound frightening. A lot of foreigners live here peacefully and happily. Some people in bad shape post stories to get help and of course they represent themselves in the best light.

Worst case scenario is you make a big mistake and you have to reapply for a visa. You’d be out of the country for a few days but while you’re here you will make friends and they will watch out for your dog. Probably won’t come to that.

In general, you just need to keep up with the requirements listed on the immigration website and listen carefully to the immigration office. Don’t wait until the last minute for anything so you have time to adjust.

I brought my dog from the uk and went through an agent. There is Thai paperwork, but the agents made it a very smooth process, they delivered my precious dog directly to my hotel

Max Petersfield I presume you have been before to Thailand and have finally decided to uproot and retire to Thailand..if it's your first time or have any doubts, maintain a base in the UK and rent out your home for a few years if you want and before you decide... I'm ex job and been going back and forth for 10 years before I finally sold up last year and got married in Thailand... Living south of Pattaya.. get in touch if you are in that area and need help or advice.. we run 2 b n b's so have helped many expats over the years..Ray

OP
Ray Turner Cheers Ray, yes I've been for the last 3 years staying for a month twice a year, I'm back again in October and again in February.

I'm looking at Jomtien, Bang Saray and Rayong.

I'm selling as renting in the UK now is a nightmare. The sale of the house would only sit in accounts to earn interest and would never need to spent. If it didn't work out I would just buy again when I got back. Obviously hoping that would never happen, but it's the safety net.

Looks like I'll be in your area, I'll send you a friend request and then hopefully arrange a beer when I'm there

Get a Non-O Visa and extensions based on retirement.

DTV is a tourist visa without a bank account and the need to reprove you meet requirements every 6 months.

Your dog doesn't want to live here. Trust me on that.

Just a few of the reasons: oppresive heat, toxic pollution, deadly snakes and poisenous centapedes.

Visas issued and you enter, next step you'd need to open bank account to deposit money and season it. Once the extension of stay is issued you wouldn't have problems unless you didn't follow the rules regarding the next extension.

Personally we avoided DTV because we brought four cats here and don't want to risk being displaced, for similar reasons. DTV is a special case because of seeming coordination issues between BOI and immigration in how it was rolled out, and I think a lot of the subsequent issues are because of that. But older, more established visas are a lot more stable, and there are plenty of services here to help even if something did happen. Like, if you did have to leave, there are pet hotels and logistic services that could help bridge your animal's care in a pinch, and road transport may be possible to adjacent countries, too. I think it's a valid concern but I also think the risk is manageable.

Paul Darby West Aussies here. Considering retiring there. I find the thought of starting with a 3 month visa scary. But it sounds like you can't apply for a year visa ? Is that correct?
Paul *******
Paul *******
Jules Donkin If you arrive with a three month visa, it can be exended inside Thailand and gives you some additinal time to sort things out.
Paul *******

Jules Donkin I arrived in Thailand on a 12 month retirement visa obtained from the Thai Consulate in Brisbane but over time the rules change. You would need to look up the facts from the Embassy in Canberra and the consulates with often have different rules. A three month visa does not give a lot of time to find accommodation, open a bank account, Transfer yor funds from $ to Thai Baht, deposit 800.000 into the bank account and season it for the required two months. Having said that many Westerners manage it.

Worst case scenario if you screw something up and cannot apply for your extension is you just go to Laos for a few days and get a new non-O visa. There's not really any situation where you'll be forced to move back to the UK.
Lydia ***********

@Brandon ***********
this was absolutely excellent advice. We get scared, but we’re because we’re moving so far away but actually that is the real science the worst case scenario you just go to a neighboring country and reapply.

Do everything yourself to ensure your Immigration status is always done by the book and legal and you'll be fine. You'd probably decide to park B800k+ in a Thai bank account so that you know you meet the financial requirement year-on-year and not risk a mishap such as a late deposit.

It would be highly unusual for an extension of stay based on retirement to be refused assuming you meet the criteria for the extension. For the initial 90 day Non-O visa you would apply for that before you travel anyway. You do need to get specific permission to import your dog into Thailand so you need to check that too, plus there are pet relocation services who will keep you right

Brett Mcgowan where in his post is he saying that people are getting deported for no reason ? he doesn't he is saying it is unsettling that he is seeing and hearing are getting application REJECTED which has nothing to do with being deported for no reason . So maybe learn to read properly or learn simple comprehension .

Brett Mcgowan no, it's just reading a lot of posts about problems people have had getting visas and a most recent post about getting online renewals rejected, hence my post to get some peace of mind about it all. It is a major thing for me to sell up in the UK to move abroad so I'm following a lot of groups and talking to as many people as I can. That's all, no offence intended, apologies if I caused you any
