TLDR : Answer Summary
Thai citizens generally need a passport to enter Malaysia. However, they may cross the border by land using a valid national ID card, especially in specific cases near the border with countries like Laos. It's important to note that for air travel, a passport is required due to formal immigration processes.

Yes to get from yes to get from France to England on a boat you do not need a passport I think it's same round all of the world

By air yes they will as it’s a formal immigration the other side. By land not so much for the Thais going back and forth through Laos,Cambodia and sometimes Malaysia.

Not true. We live on the Thai-Malaysian border and my Thai partner needs their passport or border pass whenever they wish to enter Malaysia.

In some borders, citizens may be able to travel across with just temporary visas by using just their local id. But if I am not mistaken, it is just for the area near the border, eg the nearest town. But to go on a flight and actually need to pass through immigration, I am pretty sure a passport is needed.
Terary **********
They need a passport. They (probably) don't need a visa or anything.

No, the whole of Asia is now borderless.

@James ******
give that a go sans passport. I wish you the very best!

Umm, where did you get this information from? So for example a citizen of Pakistan could just walk across the border into India and just waltz right in?

Or an Iranian could waltz into Israel? Asia is a huge continent. It has the two largest countries in the world and the fourth largest by population.

One thing I'm very sure about is that Israel is the only country in the world where a person using a Malaysian passport isn't allowed by Malaysia to go to. There are other places like north Korea that ban Malaysians but only Israel is explicitly banned by Malaysia

Yes 100% she does as she's crossing an international border,some borders ,mainly Cambodia, locals from both sides who live along the border can get paperwork passes instead of passports ,so they can cross the border for work/business purposes but they cannot go much further than the next check point,but that's only for locals living either side of the border who cross for work activity ,so she will need her passport 🙏🏽

@Jason *****
No, an ID card is enough

a lot of people get confused as at borders they see locals from each side crossing without the passport formalities ,so it's easy enough to wonder .I lived in Cambodia near a border for 14 yrs and witnessed it regularly ,so saw how it works 🙏🏽

Immigration in some Thai-Myanmar borders provide border passes in lieu of passports for the locals living by the borders of both countries. I just don't know if it is the same with Malaysian borders.

No, not everybody. Many people can travel without passport, just their national ID cards to certain countries. Not sure about the ASEAN, but in Europe, Central and South America, certain people of certain countries do not need a passport to tavel between the agreement countries.
Robert *********
@Elías *******
however you need an official ID card. As UK doesn’t issue ID cards and driving licences don’t suffice, you need your passport. Some UK carriers even want your passport to fly within UK.
Robert *********
@Elías *******
for example, from to what country to what country can one travel without a passport?
Ekkehard *******
No passport needed for German nationals to enter France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Tschechia, to name a few.

before brexit, you could travel to any EU country without a passport, and europeans can still travel within EU without passport. ASEAN is akin to EU in some repects.

uk to Ireland. It's a common travel area for uk and Irish citizens. A variety of documents besides a passport suffice for Americans/Canadians using their land border. Americans don't need a passport to go on holiday in Mexico.

U.S. citizens used to be able to visit Mexico and Canada without passport, but that changed several years ago… passports are required now.
Robert *********
@Andy *********
yes uk Ireland yes true, no visas etc and in theory no passport as a special zone. However as UK citizens don’t have ID cards they need a passport as their only form of identification to travel to Ireland. Driving licence doesn’t cover it, I’ve tried that one !

I lived in Belfast for years. Gard never stopped me for papers in a UK car, I was stopped by the police more often up north. Even when the border was armed, and during FMV, I could cross the border freely. If you flew into Belfast and drove south in a rental car, no one is going to stop you. Get a ferry from England or scotland to Larne or Belfast, you dont need a passport. Some, not all, Airlines and Ferries going directly into the Republic might set a passport requirement, but that's not an Irish government requirement. The Foreign Office advice is you should mot must have a passport. If you don't have a passport, you can obtain a Confirmation of British Nationality Certificate from HMG Incidentally, Thailand is included in the Short Stay Waiver Scheme, so some with a UK visitor can visit Ireland for a short time with needing an Irish visa.
