TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand as a New Zealander on a 60-day tourist visa, it is recommended to have proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket. While some airlines may require this before boarding, policies can vary. It's best to check with your airline prior to your flight to avoid complications. Additionally, travelers have suggested various options for securing a ticket, including purchasing a refundable ticket or using services that allow for the rental of a ticket, should you not have a fixed departure date.

The airline will mostlikely ask you a proof of ongoing travel booking before to board you on their plane

Get a flight on Expedia get checked in then cancel. You have 24 hours to cancel flight for full refund

If you are flying in without a visa they are looking at onward travel as are the airline. Does doing a land border run get round this problem

Each time I have left Auckland they have asked for a return ticket at check in, I have a long stay visa which doesn't require one, sometimes that's accepted straight away, other times they make a call, or a supervisor more aware will complete check in.
Various airlines.

Check with your airline, they might deny boarding if you don't have a ticket out

There are no land crossings between Vietnam and Thailand, because there are no land borders shared between these 2 countries.
