I need the nearest country that will allow me entry in order to process my TR visa in the shortest amount of time. I would like to be with my wife and kid for Christmas and New Years any Suggestions?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user asks about applying for a Thai TR visa while currently in Somalia and whether they need to travel back to the US or if they can apply from a nearby country. Comments suggest checking with the closest Thai embassy or consulate, considering online application options, and the impact of quarantine requirements on timely travel to Thailand for Christmas. Did you check with the Embassy in Nairobi? Or would you not be able to enter Kenya?

I’m leaving the Maldives to back to the US for my Thai visa, my only other option was to mail my passport to the Thai embassy in Sri Lanka (because there’s no Thai embassy here) and it would take a month

Just contact the closest Thai embassy/consulate. They will instruct you in what exactly to do. With the required 14 days quarantine, and the time it takes to get your certificate of entry, and those requirements, you might miss Christmas with them, as you only have three weeks until then, and two weeks will be in quarantine. You've basically got about 9 days to be boarding your plane, and have everything done in order to do that.

I thought I read some Postings that people were able to do it online. I would suggest you Google this question in multiple permutations

I believe it's either from your home country or the country where you have legal residency.

I think only some origin countries (the one you're in, not your own) require you be a legal resident to enter Thailand. I entered Thailand from Vietnam earlier this month, and I am not a legal resident of Vietnam. There was a list of countries showing which citizens, if leaving from Vietnam, would have to show legal residency, and if they didn't have that, they said the paperwork would take weeks longer. To be fair I didn't enter on the new TR visa, but I would check just to be sure. I'm assuming there's no Thai Embassy in Somalia, so you could check the legal residency requirements/or lack thereof for US citizens departing for Thailand in some nearby countries to possibly avoid going back to the US. Good luck!

It depends on the embassy. Some embassies will process tourist vasa without requiring you to be a resident (ie i know this can be done in Canada, but you cant get in there right now). There are reports of people getting visas from Turkey which is open, but I dont have first hand info.
