Do I need to request a tourist visa upon arriving in Bangkok from South Africa?
I'll be landing in Bangkok early tomorrow morning from South Africa; do I just ask for a normal tourist visa?

No. You don't need to ask for anything. Your passport will be stamped with a 30 day entry permit (a visa exemption). (I'm assuming you're South African).

you will get a 30day visa exempt stamp(correct wording) which can be extended by a further 30days at Immigration inside Thailand. As a first timer they usually not ask any addl documents, but they may ask the purpose of your stay.

Jennifer Yuwapun OP qualifies for a free 30 days visa exempt stamp, OP does not qualify for a paid visa on arrival. Only 19 countries do qualify, and the period of stay is 15 days.
