TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, South African nationals require a special visa if staying in Thailand for more than 30 days. They can enter with a visa exempt entry for 30 days or apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa for 60 days. Both options can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office. For stays longer than 60 days, a tourist visa is recommended with possible extensions.

And as there is no response of the OP and a strange discussion starts, I close the commenting.

Options:

Visa Exempt Entry for 30 days

Single Entry Tourist Visa for 60 days

Both can be Extended once with 30 days.

Like to stay longer:

Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, 6 months valid each entry 60 days.

Single Entry Non Immigrant Visa gives you 90 days once

Multiple Entry Non Immigrant Visa, gives you 90 days, 1 year, 5 years on each entry during a year, depending on the reason why you have this visa.

Thai Elite Visa for 5, 10 o 20 years.

To many options and we can discuss long about how many days you got on entry, but if you have a different visa or a different reason to get that visa the period of stay is different.

best is to use a visa that fits your purpose and length of stay.

If you know how long you like to be inside Thailand and what you like to do inside Thailand, you take a look at the website of the Thai Consulate in your area and search for a visa that fits those goals.

Get a visa exempt when you arrive and then you c an extend for another 30 days at an immigration office. If longer than 60 days you need a tourist visa which with extension gives 90 days

a tourist visa without extension would also work for 60 days. That's cheaper, and depending on how close you get to any Thai embassy or consulate it could also be easier.

Single entry tourist visa you get before you go from embassy will give you 60 days.
