What should we do about onward flight requirements when traveling to Thailand without a fixed itinerary?

Me and my partner are travelling within the next couple of weeks and we are starting in Thailand. We have read that we need to have a return flight booked or they may not let you on the flight out there… we aren’t sure where we will be going after Thailand, just taking each day as it comes when travelling, we are thinking either Cambodia, Vietnam etc… how would we get around this as we may cross the boarders via road? Any advice or self experience would be hugely appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand, you typically need an onward ticket rather than a return flight. Options include purchasing a flexible ticket that you can modify later or securing a cheap flight that you can cancel within 24 hours. Some travelers also suggest using a bus or train ticket to cross the border, although this may depend on current regulations. Ensure your ticket is to an actual destination outside Thailand, not just to a border town.

"My partner and I." Tsk tsk.

I usually just look for the cheapest ticket that I can cancel within 24 hours for full refund to book and cancel once I arrive.

maybe one more thing....partner is usually used in gay circles, so are you gay or straight? If straight you might just want to use "girlfriend" as in " my girlfriend and I"...good luck anyway!

Key word is “onward” (not necessarily “return”)

Onward Ticket is not a Return ticket, so you probably misread what you read.

just book a cheap sacrificial flight to Phnom Penh

I feel like we may have this issue now. Our visa was declined for a 32 day stay but the flight to the next country had been booked. Do we need to change/book another flight in the 30day window for us to be allowed in??

what visa did you apply for?

You can apply for a 60 tourist visa before travelling, they're easy to do and should not take long to be approved. It will be cheaper and easier than seeking an extension in Thailand.

You have no time to apply before flying now, so I would seek an extension after arrival.

just need to know if we need to book before we get there as we go tomorrow 🥲

yes it was that one but because we are in dubai currently instead of the UK they won’t let us get one

Check air Asia for cheap flights out - were looking at Hanoi

Pre covid you could use a bus ticket out. Now that land borders are open again that option may work again.

It has to be a ticket out of Thailand, it can’t be a bus ticket to a border town where you can walk across a border.

Alternatively use Skyscanner to find any ticket out of Thailand during your first 30 days. Can be from any airport to anywhere one way. An example would be Phuket to Singapore approx £30/$45 depending on time of year.

Buy a visa in y'r home country. With most (not all !) airline companies you have this problem when you have NO visa and only want come in on visa exempt. And it's also what Bobby Howard says. So even a bus/train ticket out of the country will do.

just one way ticket

Can book any onward ticket out and change or cancel it later

You need an ONWARD ticket, NOT a return. Get a Flexi ticket to wherever you plan to go next within the timeframe of your entry stamp and change the date when your dates are firm.
