I intend to visit (visa exempt) for 45-55 days before leaving to Laos or Vietnam. Flying in from Aus. Given I'm not sure when I'll leave Thailand (definitely before the 60 days though) will I need an onward ticket of some sort? Potentially for both the Airline (Jetstar) or Thai immigration or both? Feel like I'll leave Thailand from Nong Kai by land rather than fly, although nothing is concrete atm. Help appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the necessity of an onward ticket for their trip to Thailand, where they plan to stay for 45-55 days without a visa. Comments indicate that while Thai immigration may not always request proof of onward travel, airlines, like Jetstar, might require it. Users recommend having an onward ticket as a safety measure to avoid complications at the airport. Additionally, it's advised that the user secures a visa for Vietnam in advance, as Australia does not offer visa-on-arrival for Australians.

Its the airline who might ask. Can always use a service like Best Onward Ticket

Go the safe way, and get a onward ticket, to avoid being rejected at the airport

It's very difficult to say.

But it's far less likely Thailand immigration will ask about onwards travel but not sure on the airline...

I have flown 1 way in the past without any problems..

Just on another note regarding your travel..

Make sure you have a visa for Vietnam BEFORE you travel as there is NO visa on arrival for Australian passport into Vietnam.

You must have a visa before you either fly or attempt to enter by land.

And be aware buying last minute flights back to Australia can be quite expensive as well if you are planning to do that..

Yes, it's required.
